A call to arms for all Ottawa-based lovers of men in dresses reading to children

Pre-emptive Janny post

As a reminder to all users:

Hate and misinformation about these events will not be tolerated.

These are not "adult events". These events are not "sexualized". Drag has existed for literally centuries, and not all drag is sexual in nature.

If you're here to troll, and spread hate, you will be sanctioned. This is your warning.

But some didn't listen

As a gay person myself, I'm curious why drag needs to be "marketed" to kids. The event itself may not be sexualized, but drag culture in general is. There are much better ways to help kids be more accepting of others than these culture-war imports from the US.

Drag is clownery. Do you ask yourself why a parent might pay for a clown to come to a kids birthday party?

Some drag, just like some clownery, is sexual. Drag for kids and clownery for kids is not sexual.

At least they admit they're acting like :marseyclown2:

/u/fleurgold, the janny from above going hard in the replies too

really don't appreciate people telling the gay community what drag is and isn't.

Unfortunately for you, you don't speak for the LGBTQ+ community.

Drag story time is not at all sexual, and drag in and of itself is not necessarily sexual. And drag has existed for literally centuries, without being sexualized.

Honestly, what you're doing is spitting up TERF fear mongering talking points/misinformation, and applying them to drag.

This is an official warning. Knock it off.

But one brave :marseytrain: stands up to this injustice

Please don't conflate drag with being trans. Yes our two communities have overlap, and many common foes, but drag is not typically considered to be under the trans umbrella. The idea that it is perpetuates the stereotype that trans women are just men engaging in performance art. The experiences of drag queens and trans women are both legitimate, but are still fundamentally distinct from one another. I don't object to anything else in your comment

That is fair, and I've edited my comment. I'm sorry.

Fortunately the janny apologized

I can't change work meetings schedule on that short notice. If you post the next one a bit more ahead of time I think you might get more people. ( Or maybe outside of regular working hours )

Ummmm, could you be a little more accommodating with your protest schedules, I'm kind of busy today.

Serious Q for you. I'm a rather blue collar worker, never been to a drag show before and don't really get it. I don't think im a bigot but also dont see why there has been a craze around having men dressed up in womens clothing reading stories to children. I dont think all these men have weird intentions but it seems weird/sexualized to me. Can you explain it to me?

To put it really simply, it's a thing that's been around for ages. Drag Queens have big, over the top personalities, wear colourful clothes, and put on an entertaining show for kids. There's more energy than your standard story time.

Right leaning outlets have just chosen this as their latest thing to get people riled up about. It's literally nothing but stirring up more hate because transphobia is so popular these days with that crowd.

Edit: To the shadow banned guy that replied to this snarkily asking for a source that it's been around for ages - I went as a kid in the 80s. In Ottawa. If you want more, Google is fully at your disposal to find out how long the library has been presenting this event. You should try it, it's a wonderful tool.

This kind of thing has always been happening you fricking transphobe, I was groomed by them myself! And no I won't provide you a source that's also transphobia.

That janny is actually hilarious, I did some digging into her when the trucker stuff was happening.

This absolute genius took 5+ years to complete a 4 semester codecel college diploma, this is the level of intelligence you are dealing with.

She's mentally ill (ADHD, depression, anxious, insomnia),with a heart condition that prevents her from doing anything more than mild cardio. She probably can't even have a good frick without her heart exploding :marseylaugh:

She also had some deleted femcel essayposts from years ago because her bf dumped her.

If they mean men dressing up as women for theatrics then yes, that’s been happening since the invention of the theater. It’s pretty hilarious however to watch libs pretend that moid actors pretending to be women because they needed more base voices for the theater is the exact same as a dude dressing up like a caricature of a woman to go interact with kids. Some of the rightoid outrage maybe an overreaction but to pretend that this is only (implicitly) sexual to you because you’ve been brainwashed by the patriarchy is an excellent rhetorical game of stop hitting yourself.

This guy:

Has much to say about how drag shows aren't sexual and that it's completely fine if kids are exposed to them trans story hour:

![](/images/16758116637357705.webp)

https://camas.unddit.com/#{%22author%22:%22PEDANTlC%22,%22resultSize%22:100,%22query%22:%22kids%22}

For one, do you really think a bikini top makes that much of a difference to anyone? If someone is going to sexualize someone that is under age, the little bit of fabric covering their chest isn't going to stop them. But if you've really got a problem with sexualizing minors, you should take it up with the people that do it, not the people that feel more comfortable swimming or tanning shirtless. Finally, young boys go around shirtless and that's not a problem? Do you think p-dophiles only go after little girls? Are you unaware that male chests are considered attractive to people that are into men? Is it more okay if a gay guy or a chick checks out a shirtless 16 year old boy than if the opposite were to check out a shirtless 16 year old girl? Because I don't see you arguing against the former despite it already being something that could happen.

I don't really get it's even progressive or pro LGBT to expose kids to drag. No one is fighting to expose kids to burlesque and the arguments that people use for drag reading times could be applied to that. Yes burlesque is totally sexualized but by the same standard, there are probably examples where it isn't.

If a dude is dressed as a woman and it's totally desexualized, then it's probably not drag. Its probably a Benny Hill gag or a WKUK sketch and people would normally laugh. Maybe that's what the proponents are claiming is the drag thats existed for centuries that is just clowning? Then why would it be so important making sure every kid sees White Chicks?

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.

Neighbor you wanna dress up in gay outfits and read books to children for some weird reason and people are calling you out on how fricking weird that inclination is. You are not being oppressed by being protested, especially when, for some reason that I still don’t understand, you have the backing of the entire liberal American establishment.

I've seen drag shows, drag brunches and drag storytime and they're all pretty different. If we were encouraging kids to shove dollar bills down the front of a drag queen's shirt as they gyrated on their laps, okay, not great. But that's not what's happening, it never has.

At the last drag storytime I went to in DC, it was just a heap of parents and kiddos in a community space, while these elaborate (and, importantly, sparkly) performers sang a few nursery rhymes, read a couple of books about the importance of being yourself and ended with a rousing rendition of head and shoulders, knees and toes. the kids were absolutely obsessed with their costumes and loved singing, asking questions and posing for pictures and then we all went on our merry way. It was a great experience that sadly was on hiatus during the worst of the pandemic. I, for one, am really excited to see this show up in Ottawa now that we've moved back and I think my car-and-makeup-obsessed 3 year old is going to get a kick out of it, too.

This is one of my favorite reddit comments of all time:

Am I not allowed to express my opinion?

Your opinion is wrong though and it's misinformation. You've said that drag culture is sexual, a lot of people have provided evidence and arguments that it's not, and you're still saying that it is. You've just got a wrong and frankly offensive opinion that you're refusing to change despite a lot of effort to convince you otherwise, and people don't appreciate that - especially because your wrong opinion is then used by others as justification that trans people shouldn't exist (and all the implications of what it means for a group of people to not exist).
