Being "centrist" does not mean that you have zero closely held beliefs. It does not mean that you are "literally in the center" of two positions. It means that you do the heavy-lifting of evaluating each individual claim and do not blindly vote based on partisan affiliation.
If you're more comfortable, use the term "independent." I keep hoping for a day when educated adults can think beyond the literal meaning of words: The Patriot Act was not about patriotism, Anti-Fa is not about antifascism, The DPRK is not a democratic people's republic.... etc.

It's a very poorly defined term, however, the way I think of it is that it is attacking broad political subcultures, regardless of the size of those subcultures. So we basically just make fun of everyone that takes politics seriously. The right has their own set of cherished beliefs, as does the left.
