Unironically, EverQuest is literally a retirement home these days for people who couldn't move to a new game 20 years ago. It's pretty much the same playerbase playing new expansions and replaying timelocked progression servers.

Blizz very likely used the EQ progression-locked servers as a template for Classic WoW.
