"Affordable housing" is always an r-slured tax money dump that inadequately does what the free market would do much better. Governments make building new houses illegal and then "Woah! What's up with this supply-demand imbalance? Better spend tons of cash on it to not fix anything!"

Either way, free market doesn't solve shit. What's the incentive to build affordable housing if all housing you build gets bought up by domestic and foreign investors, AirBnB's and rich people in general? Ask vidyag*mers how good free market has been to them in the past 2-3 years.
If there are perverted incentives to use housing as value storage or even investment, free market will inevitably cater to those at the expense of the poors.

Is the statement that there are more empty houses than homeless people inaccurate? I'm not some r-slurred commie, I understand why you need to have empty houses, all I'm saying is that building new housing that is gonna get bought out by corporations, rich people or foreigners is kinda pointless, and you don't need to just build, build and build (at least not everywhere - sure SF might need a lot, other cities very little).
Anyway, I agree with your first two sentences, it's a good start to making sure what you build is gonna end up in hands of people who need it an utilize it.

There are schemes in the US called affordable housing that basically work. The government basically says "let poors rent out at ~60% of the market rate and we'll make you whole" which minimally impacts market forces. You're thinking of rent control which is absolutely r-slurred and breaks everything.

Chocolate fondue, the various meat dishes, I also highly recommend Rosti, a friend potato dish where you shred a peeled potato, press it into a frying pan, flip both sides until they are brown. Very delicious. Zopf bread is delicious, especially if you put butter and jam on it.
