U.S. Space Force budget hits $30 billion in 2024 proposal - Space News

https://spacenews.com/u-s-space-force-budget-hits-30-billion-in-2024-funding-proposal

Breakdown from the article for people who are lazy.

  • $19.2 billion for research, development, testing and engineering (RDT&E)

  • $4.7 billion for procurement

  • $4.9 billion for operations and maintenance

  • $1.2 billion for military personnel

It's a LOT of money, doubling the USSF budget from 2021. It's more than NASA's budget in the same year, and a good chunk of NASA's budget goes into aeronautical research. And two thirds of that massive number is going into R&D. That's a huge perk of the Air/Space force split, is that there's now an incredibly well funded US government branch exclusively funding new space tech, and then buying a lot of it too. That's going to dramatically increase the amount of new tech available to everyone as these same companies will reuse what they develop on other satellites.

A lot of that money is going into LEO satellites, and a lot of it into new launch vehicles. There's a huge focus on smaller spacecraft that can be built faster and sent up cheaper, and it looks like micro/picosat constellations are now definitely the way forward.

More funding means more actors in space means more spacecraft means more people involved means growing industry. We're all gonna make it :marseyastronaut2:

Honestly it's one of the best things Trump did. It's gonna be wild when they move the Space Force HQ to Huntsville. Gonna spend some of those billions on new facilities at the Redstone Arsenal.

Yeah, I know. I was so excited when he did it. I was pretty mad at Netflix for making that dumbass comedy immediately after he announced it, just to be partisan hacks. I hear techbros laughing about it all the time now and it pisses me off. It's looking like it's one of the biggest strategic moves of the next few decades, and it's already paying off. Can't wait to see what comes out of it

The argument always seems to come down to "uh well space force sounds stupid" but it's a really generic name and no more stupid than "United States Air Force". Plus the name itself is just about the least important part of the whole branch.

It sounds like a forgettable 80s scifi cartoon.

Also using navy jargon for space is way fetcher.

The People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force (PLASSF; Chinese: δΈε›½δΊΊζ°‘θ§£ζ”Ύε†›ζˆ˜η•₯ζ”―ζ΄ιƒ¨ι˜Ÿ) is the space, cyber, political, and electronic warfare force and the 5th branch of the People's Liberation Army.

Kinda but not only space related so it's name is somewhat descriptive of it's role as support for the PLA.

They have gay naming like Rocket Force and Ground Force though which at that point they should Rename the Navy to Naval Force to keep the sterile theming.

You want it named "United States Space Navy"?

Cooler to just call it the navy when that time comes but an actual criticism is that every other part of the US military has a "unique" name but space force shares force with the air force.

And while all the mottos are pretty gay I think space force's motto is the worst.

He lucked out when the Iranians shot down their own jet. That took a lot of wind out of their sails that they would have otherwise used to stir up shit all over the ME with their proxies. Then COVID hit the world and locked Iran down for over a year.
