Reddit decides to start more chaos than rDrama ever could. If they kill off third party clients it's going to turn into Instagram and make power users seethe.

Shit, i think accessing all links here through baconreader is the only reason my accounts don't get fingerprinted and banned. If i need to pay a couple bucks a month to cover the api cost, so be it

Ethots btfo though, api won't do nsfw content apparently so there goes a huge audience

What's the nsfw issue? Why does reddit want to exclude it?

They want an IPO, can't do that if investors see them as a porn platform.

But they still have porn and aren't suggesting getting rid of the porn (yet). You can still search any depravity you want and find it using reddits search or google. This seems to just be about excluding it from the api?

They are trying to be gradual so people don't really notice, they want to avoid a digg situation. They started with "violent" porn, then porn featuring characters with an "underage appearance", then also removing NSFW from search results unless you log in, and now this.

It's honestly quite clever with how vague they made the rules; except for the fact that a big chunk of traffic is :!marseycoomer:s and this is only going to strengthen other platforms for images and gifs. It's why a bunch of :!marseycoomer:s and shitposters moved to Twitter, they tend to follow each other.

The only successful pivot I can think of is reddit focusing on long form reasoned content, but lol, that's not happening unless they clean house.

the echo chamber is out of control. the mods suck. the site layout sucks. admins are too stupid and lazy to do anything useful. ffs people post the same unfunny memes from 11 years ago

I have seen Redditor used as an insult among Gen Z. It literally means the same exact thing it meant in 2011.

For the non-terminally-online, Reddit is just Quora with more mass shooters.

Exactly they need to clean house, which I only see happing if investors sell to a private buyer with an interest in social media; basically another Musk. The absolute meltdown if someone like Larry Ellison buys Reddit would be hilarious.

then also removing NSFW from search results unless you log in

You can easily bypass this by going to a nsfw sub and clicking past the 18 or older pop up. Then you can enable nsfw search results. On old reddit at least.

I wouldn't know :marseyshrug:, I don't search on Reddit, nor do I look at NSFW content on Reddit. Good to know regardless, and still shows Reddit is trying to crack down on things.

I have been hearing about leddits IPO since like 2011

they are probably hoping to go the tumblr route and sell it high while letting their buyer yahoo ban porn and eat the cost, a very effective business plan imo

It keeps getting pushed back every time they get some additional cash, which is slowing down in this economy.

The negative pr certainly didn't help matters, but if they couldn't find more investors they absolutely would have had an IPO by now by sheer necessity.

The IPO was coming shortly after Place skyrocketed DAU last year but thats around the time the overall markets were doing badly and Reddit had to delay

With reddit's history, porn is unironically one of their least problems. Place is crawling with more pedos than Groomercord

Pedos at least try and hide so Reddit can take a pretty passive approach and still seem reasonable to investors, the feds, and the public. Also Reddit isn't going to face much backlash by banning pedos, coomers on the other hand will riot.

So yeah, pedos are a problem, but it's a problem they can easily solve without destroying the platform.

why do investors hate money? the coomer audience will always be bigger and more willing to spend money than asexuals

They have no problem funding sin industries, they are just aware that almost all of Reddit's revenue is from advertisers who don't like NSFW content. Also you can't get children to use products from sin companies, not unless you want the feds to get involved. Minors are vital to building a moat and turning users into lifers.

Also investors tend to dislike investing in porn specifically because most users are fairweather and don't have a strong attachment to the brands. How many people would have a branded piece of merch from a brand like Nintendo, Ford, or McDonald's, contrast that with Pornhub merch. Customers don't want to be associated with porn brands and thus don't form the unhealthy dependencies investors love (at least not at the same rate).
