So much shit is endangered because humans are effectively a force of nature. Humanity has driven numerous species of shark, crocodiles, dragonflies, and horseshoe crabs to endangered status. Those are all species that are hundreds of millions of years old. The only species that don't suffer are those that freeride on human survival strategy, i.e. rats, pigeons, etc. They didn't adapt to humans, though; they just happened to be lucky enough to be able to occupy ecological niches in human societies.

The only species that is truly a "survivor" is the cockroach. They're 280 million years old and have always thrived in most conditions.
