EFFORTPOST [Effortpost] The writer strike has finally begun! Disney shills in shambles :soycry:

:marseyrevolution: Support the writers! :marseyrevolution:

Remember: The writers aren't to blame here. The studios are, for refusing to pay them a fair wage for their works and trying to AI-ify art. Never back down, never give in!

This thread is very very long and hits every possible argument related to the strike, from unions, communism, capitalism to AI, internet regulations and horse carriages. You can read it and stop here frankly.

If your business model is only sustainable by not paying labor, you have an immoral and unjust business model.

what’s ironic is that it’s not even sustainable with that, lol.

:#marseyhesright:

I fully support the writers. But I am also sad for how much this will delay the final season of Handmaids.

I hope the show will get canceled just to see redditors seethe :marseygilead: :marseygravedance:

Streaming services overwhelmingly screw their writers out of as much money as possible. And it’s not to give us their services at a bargain cost. Large mega corporations are never satisfied with stable profits. Everything has to be a bigger record profit than last year, or they take it out on their staff.

This is the source of basically every problem in America. I can't stand this. And we actually made it illegal to not do this.

We are no longer citizens, we are consumers. At the expense of our planet, our own health, or the well-being of others, we must consume. Infinite, exponential growth with no sign of stopping.

And yet they find endless number of excuses when you tell them to just stop consooming :marseydisney:

Firm reminder that in 2021, David Zaslav [Warner] earned 212.7 246 million dollars.

"earned"

(ノ゚0゚)ノ

Please all replace "earned" with "got paid". He did not earn that. He stole the surplus from the workers that generate the profit.

Yes, that's how businesses work :marseycapitalistmanlet:

Nobody earns hundreds of millions of dollars. We need to stop speaking about executive pay as something they earned. The workers earned that, not him.

By this logic, the workers are responsible for the failures of the company too, but no one is consistent. You can’t have it both ways and expect to be taken seriously.

🥾 Your boot, sir

Reeeeeeeeeeeeee! Let me circlejerk in peace!! :soyjaktantrum:

Are there really legitimate voices that say "I'm with the multi-billion dollar studios on this one, the little guys should just get back to work and accept that you don't always get paid"?

It's usually the peeps who admire and idolize billionaires. And it's partially how the studios spin their argument. "Oh, you don't like these episodes of your favorite show? Blame the greedy writers who wouldn't work and make it better"

I'm sure they have plenty of examples of that happening :marseyeyeroll:

Anybody who claims to love movies and doesn't support this strike is a schmuck.

Or an AI techbro

:#marseyelonpaypig:

:marseyindignant: Frick the writers, they suck! :marseyindignant:

Why? The common denominator lately among disappointing movies and tv shows is crap writing, so why are we supposed to feel bad for the crap writers behind crap writing getting crap pay? Honestly I don’t think they’re going to be happy with the reckoning coming their way that they brought on themselves. I hope this strike cleans house frankly.

A huge portion of crap writing is the studios dictating content to writers. I can’t wait for shows written entirely by marketing focus groups

Might just as well, how much worse can the scripts even get at this point?

Not recently. Most TV shows and movies are now just liberal talking points jammed into unfunny, millenial speak dialogue. An AI will have no problem replicating if not completely improving on it.

That could actually be the result of the working conditions they're striking about. If only affluent LA natives in their 20s can afford to be writers, that's what you'll get.

Oh yes, I'm sure the union has nothing to do with why only certain people can become writers.

I'm fed up of people feeling entitled to a pay rise tied with inflation. All it does it further fuel inflation.

Some are thinking of the wider context here...

American Tv stars who make LITERALLY 10x the minimum wage: "yeah we're going on strike to get better wages"

American workers who earn so little they can't afford rent: "yeah I picked up a second minimum wage job. They don't give me any lunch breaks, which is against the law, but that's pretty commonplace and there's nothing I can do about it."

Gjekgkekgkrkkgkf. GIVE ME STRONGER UNIONS!!!!!

...only to end up sperging out :marseysmugautist:

I don't know what I'm going to do without another Adam Sandler or The Rock movie if any are delayed this year.

This started a small slapfight.

No wonder Netflix just decided to invest $2 billion in new Korean content - it allows them to keep putting out new content during a WGA strike

Heck yea. Korean entertainment is doing it better anyway

The koreaboos have entered the chat :marseyfemboy:

With the writers on strike, who will write Sing 3, Toy Story 5, Marvel Movie #2746, or Spiderman 16? 😭😭

Whoever wrote Velma should not be compensated.

:marppyenraged: The AI revolution is here :marppyenraged:

Are you guys not shellshocked by how quickly ai has become an issue? Prepandemic it wasn’t even thought about by most. Now strikes are happening because of it. We are in the future and it’s a dystopian one

Before the pandemic, when you would tell some commie that the lazy entitled employees will get replaced by robots they would act all smug that the technology isn't there yet. Now they tremble in fear :marseysmug2:

These are the death throes of creative writers, unfortunately. A.I. will reduce total jobs to 1/5 of their former amount...

"creative"

Lmao and this exemplifies why those saying AI scripts will be the new wave are wrong. Bots can’t detect context.

Neither can redditors :marseysmug:

Makes sense. Whereas other studios want to use AI as a last resort, Netflix is probably salivating at the thought of Skynet writing Bridgerton season 12. Frick Netflix, and WGA solidarity forever!

This. Sonic Prime feels so by-the-book for Sonic media that it fricking hurts, despite its wild-on-paper premise. And that's just something NETFLIX ONLY DISTRIBUTES. Internal wise? Get ready for the mass imitation of GDT Pinocchio by Skynet. :/

Why do redditors make everything they disagree with sound as cool as possible? Who wouldn't want to see Skynet's interpretation of Pinocchio?

Looking forward to all the new original screenplays written by ai

Then the comments prove how nothing will change.

ChatGPT and Adobe priming up their AI servers for an influx of prompts to write scripts...

I was watching Independence Day and Independence Day: Resurgence and the quality of dialog and acting is night and day difference. Everything in the first was so natural and authentic while everything in the second looked like it was written by an AI trying too hard.

I bet AI could’ve written a better sequel lmao

Chat GPT will write TV and movies.

Great. Now all TV and movies are going to be written by chat GPT for the next few months.

How will we be able to tell?

:soycry: Nooo! My Marvelrino movies!! :soycry:

So is Marvel studios, honestly. One might say the strike is the last nail in the coffin of comic book movies... and maybe the last stake in Blade's chest. Some motherlovers are always trying to ice skate uphill

this hyperbole is wild. marvel movies are still very profitable for marvel and you’re greatly over exaggerating that marvel studios is dead lmao. they literally had a 12 year streak of churning out hit after hit, marvel is not going to die within our generation

Marvel Studios just cannot catch a break recently, can they? This strike could really compound their recent problems with reception, and that could lead to really big problems. Better to delay some stuff than release more Quantumanias or worse imo, and that includes Blade if it's not up to snuff right now.

Marvel movies have mainly been bad to mediocre , so nothing will change.

there has been 2 marvel movies this year I doubt audiences are that fatigued tbh

Hyper-specific question but does this affect the James Gunn DC reboot? If so is the DC going on hold after Joker2?

Frick your capeshit movies! What about MY capeshit movies! :soyjakhipster:

As both writer and director, good to know that James Gunn is backing the WGA’s strike and ceasing work on Superman Legacy.

:#marseysociety2:

:marseynouautism: The culture war coliseum :marseynouautism:

It's been funny seeing anti-SJW media channels stump for him because he killed "woke Batgirl."

With bonus Snyder-verse drama! :marseysociety:

Jesus. Do they not remember the absolute god awful cesspool that was the last strike? We got racist, monkey looking robots in transformers saying "we don't like to read too much".

Is this true? :marseyxd:

Well last time this happened, the domino effect led to Trump being elected. I'm terrified to see the intended consequences this time

If Daddy will be elected a second time, do you guys think it will become it's own conspiracy theory?

Aren't these the people who write all the woke stuff?

:marseybib: Further proof that redditors are mentally children :marseybib:

Apparently, this strike happened because Netflix was being full of sh!t.

Mama would be proud of this manchild for not swearing on the internet :marseynerd:

This is only from Jeff Sneider, but according to him, this is happening all because Netflix was an undiplomatic chucklef—k. If so, then I hope that Netflix gets banned from this year’s Oscar ceremony for even allowing to let this happen.

Not only is this redditor using childish insults like chuckefrick, he's also censoring them :marseyhammersnoo:

darnit cant people just get along and pay appropriate wages and be happy 😭

Why can't everyone get along like in my children cartoons :marseysoycry:

Jesus frick at some point I'd realize I won't be alive long enough to spend all that so why not give it back and let it trickle down... ...oh cuz, like dragons, humans are horrible creatures that do nothing but sit on their hoard of gold.

:marseydisney: One brave Disney shill single-handedly tries to stop the AI menace :marseydisney:

I'm putting this last because it's long. Slight context, reddit user Block-Busted is a perpetually online /r/boxoffice user that comments on anything Disney related and defends it to the death: Marvel movies are always good and profitable (he kinda had to admit the latest movies suck tho, but he tries to downplay this), Disney movies haven't lost their magic, bad talks other animation companies, you get the gist. I had him tagged as 'Disney shill' for awhile and I genuinely hope he's actually getting paid for all the effort. All the comments in this section were meant to go into the AI revolution category until I realized that he obsessively responded to every single AI comment in the boxoffice thread. Here is his effort documented (any comment that doesn't have a link attached is his):

AI about to take the jobs of Hollywood writers 😎 Gonna be interesting to see Hollywood be the first to feel the wrath of AI

I've said this to other posters several times, but AI scripts are going to get into all sorts of legal controversies that studios might not want to face, especially when the strike is happening, not to mention that AI scripts are not all that good to begin with.

Or studios will use AI… technology is there. Might as well use it

Again, AI scripts are going to get into all sorts of legal controversies that studios might not want to face, especially when the strike is happening, not to mention that AI scripts are not all that good to begin with.

Right during the peak of the hype cycle of ChatGPT. If the last strike led to a ton of shitty reality shows, are we in for a deluge of AI generated scripts?

Actually, by the sound of it, AIs are one of the reasons why Writers Guild were trying to be on strike, not to mention that, while this is only for artworks for now, AI-generated materials are not protected by copyright laws the last time I’ve heard.

That would still be a can of worms for legal issues since they would keep have to use AI for that. And again, considering that AIs are some of the reasons why this strike was building up in the first place, using AI to write scripts during the Writers Strike might end up becoming a massive PR nightmare for that studio.

Not to mention that AIs are some of the reasons why this strike was building up in the first place.

That might actually be why studios might be rather less willing to rely on AI because if they do that, they would end up validating Writers Guild's argument and cause their reputation to plummet.

But here's the thing. You're going to need actual thinking AIs to fully avoid copyright issues and we have no idea when they're even going to become a feasible idea, not to mention that you still need human writers to polish whatever AI wrote, so studios would still need proper writers if they don't want so many legal troubles happening to their faces, not to mentiont that current AI scripts tend to be utter messes, especially if they're longer.

The problem with that idea is that not only AI scripts are not protected by copyright laws, which could end up putting studios into endless legal headaches, but most of those scripts are... not all that good, meaning that using AI to write scripts might not worth endless legal troubles.

Again, they still need some human writers to make those AI scripts unique enough to avoid copyright issues, which is probably not possible as of now.

But the thing is, you still need human writers to even attempt that and doing that without a WGA writer in this time period could result in a massive PR nightmare that they might not want to face.

I've said this to another poster, but by the sound of it, AIs are one of the reasons why Writers Guild were trying to be on strike, not to mention that, while this is only for artworks for now, AI-generated materials are not protected by copyright laws the last time I’ve heard.

Again, considering that AIs are some of the reasons why this strike was building up in the first place, using AI to write scripts during the Writers Strike might end up becoming a massive PR nightmare for that studio.

I'm not sure if that argument is worth the trouble considering that with reality shows, they still come up with their own ideas to an extent while such argument is going to be a lot harder to make it work with AI scripts.

Doubtful. If AI-generated scripts become norm, studios could lose their audience exponentially due to how awful those scripts can get. I mean, they start out okay, but they basically turn into Friedberg/Seltzer travesties as they progress.

A.I. is coming for a lot of the easier scripts… only a matter of time.

Again, the thing about that is that you still need human writers if you're hoping to avoid copyright issues, not to mention that most AI scripts are... not that good.

This reeks of ignorance since that's going to be a lot harder to do with longer scripts, not to mention that we don't even know if copyright laws would even allow that to happen for scripts. Again, I'm not sure if studios are going to risk that while this is happening. Also, for your earlier point, there are good scripts that ended up getting ruined by poor directings or studio meddlings.

But doing that during Writers Guild Strike would result in a lot of PR nightmare since that would look like studios are shooting writers in their backs. And again, you're still going to need human writers to polish those scripts if they even want a remote chance of avoiding legal troubles.

I hope ChatGPT writes some real classic Rick and Morty episodes this year. No need to get all introspective, robot; just give me those good old Rick and Morty adventures.

That would result in all sorts of issues like script itself being abysmal, legal headaches, and so on.

Hey GptChat, Bing, etc… Write me a script for a Superman movie staring Superman and he does super stuff to super evil aliens that look like humans. Also, incorporate Superman’s weakness to kryptonite and his mother’s name Martha. This script needs to produce a movie that makes $1 billion. Print.

If studios actually do something like that, they might end up facing all sorts of issues like script itself being abysmal, legal headaches, and so on.

And now… we wait. Will the studios take the billions they have an automate the writing process? Or perhaps it’s still a bit too early to get rid of them yet?

We need to have thinking AIs to even make that become a possible idea.

chatgpt 📈📈

Actually, by the sound of it, AIs are some of the reasons why this strike was building up AND AI-generated works are apparently not protected by copyright laws. As far as I’m aware, this is mostly for artworks, but who knows if that gets extended to others as well.

To shake things up for a little bit, he's also getting triggered by the idea of streaming using foreign writers.

This can lead to a bigger boom of foreign shows on Netflix

Not really. There are no shortage of cultural barriers that they might end up facing.

I wonder if this will create a massive opportunity for foreign content. Never going to have a better chance for Anime and Kdramas to go mainstream.

Doubtful. Anime and K-dramas are still going to have some cultural barriers that they need to overcome.

But those becoming fully mainstream is another matter. Keep in mind, at least reality shows didn't have so much cultural barriers involved.

Well, there's another thing with anime - some of them are downright cringeworthy (trust me, they can even make Eternals and Quantumania look like legit masterpieces) and could end up tarnishing anime's reputation in general.

Why would Disney need writers in the current year of our Lord 2023?

I've got their new movie right here:

It's ok. The whole Hollywood concept is going to come crashing down in the next 10 years as foreign films are starting to catch up. The fact that more people are watching anime and youtube than TV is starting to take it's toll.

That's because 90% of video consoomers are goyslop enjoyers. Most anime and YouTube in the current day is absolute garbage with no real value. Just like all of TV since 95

Korean movies, tv shows, dramas, a number of Euro movies, etc have won awards or have been at the very least catching up in technical detail. Acting is still a sore spot, but they just don't have the infrastructure for it like we do. Look at the Brits. It wasn't that long ago that their TV shows were only available through shady deals and VHS tapes not that long ago. Now half the actors you hear about are either British or Australian/New Zealand. It's only a matter of time before Hollywood can't compete. They've already moved a number of their production to states/countries with more favorable tax offerings, but of course as soon as their politics don't perfectly match California it's OVER!

Yeah I don't think Hollywood will be able to compete for much longer.

British programming has been around for a couple decades. It's just getting exposure in the US because of streaming, but that doesn't mean it's going to replace Hollywood. South Korea is a (relatively) new contender but I don't see it having the scope to overtake Hollywood. I've been following South Korean cinema for a decade and while it has had a few hits in the West (Snowpiercer, Train to Busan, Squid Games), it still remains mostly an appendage to Hollywood programming. Snowpiercer released in 2013 and people have been predicting the South Korean takeover since then.

Now half the actors you hear about are either British or Australian/New Zealand.
