A streamer-addicted man is being charged with arson after he tried setting fire to his apartment in a suicide attempt after racking up an exorbitant debt amassed through his habit of spending over 80,000 yen a month on streamer donations, and he now has more to pay due to the damage he caused.
In December 2021, a fire broke out in a two-story wooden apartment in Tokyo just after 3:00 a.m. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and rescued the unconscious 53-year-old office worker. At his first trial on April 24th, the man admitted to the charges in a muffled voice and explained that he set the fire using kerosene in an attempt to commit suicide.
The following excerpt is from the questioning of the defendant in court:
When did you start using the livestreaming app?
Around October 2020.
What made you start?
When covid started, I caught it after going out and eating out. I didn’t want to set a bad example at work, so I secluded myself. I was using my smartphone and came across the app.
Did you have any anxiety prior to the incident?
There was anxiety about not being able to stop using the app and also anxiety over running out of money.
What about any debt?
I felt pain when my debt started piling up. I make about 250,000 yen a month. Rent (including parking) is 84,000 yen, phone bill (which includes me, my ex-wife, and my son) for 37,000 yen. In the months prior to the incident, I was spending 80,000 yen a month on the livestreaming app, and my savings were dwindling.
What is this livestreaming app like?
You basically toss something like coins to the people that are streaming, and they are ranked based on that. It is kind of like the streamer’s salary.
And you were a devoted fan of one of them?
Yes, I really like people who sing, and I was a devoted fan.
What was it that made them so appealing?
There’s a ranking among listeners, and those who throw a lot (of coins) get ranked higher, and the streamers repeatedly call your handle name. That alone had become enough reason to live.
Is 80,000 yen a month of ‘donations’ considered a large sum?
Well, there are no limits to how much you can give, so there’s no limit.
You talked about being a devoted fan has given you a ‘reason to live,’ but could it also have anything to do with why you decided not to commit suicide?
No, well… it isn’t free. I want to quit, but I can’t.
Is there anything about your income that makes you worry?
When I was younger, there was overtime work, so depending on the month, I made enough to recover from squandering money. However, after corona, there’s been less work.
When you started the fire, didn’t you think about it being a danger to the other residents?
I’m sorry, but I was doing the best I could to kill myself, so I wasn’t thinking about others.
There are other ways to commit suicide, so why arson?
I own a few indecent items that I don’t want others to see, so I thought about burning everything altogether.
Items such as?
Such as DVDs.
Adult DVDs?
That is right.
Who were you trying to avoid from seeing those?
… my parents.

This one seems to be, he's only making like $1900 a month. I had a part time job doing grant writing my last year of undergrad, was making more than that then, lmao.
Non-American losers tend to make a lot less after massive taxes, their healthcare and other services are subsidized with it, but Americans are still making more even after you factor in us paying for our own healthcare.

Japan economy kinda is poor, last 25 years their economy growth total was 2% when in US was 150-200%. Japan picked in 80ties then went down in 90 ties and now stays there. One reason why their economy is fricked up now is US and plaza accord

Japan is still a better place to live, that low economic growth comes from the fact that they're not working too hard anymore and just have comfy, frick around jobs.

Well sadly this shit will soon be very normal in the west. I studied history of that shit and it was normal in Japan in 2004 wasting 1000 buks on dlc’s clothes (idolm@ster) back then John thought wasting 20 buks on big expansion was rip off, like people were mad with 2 bux horse dlc in oblivion but today even Ivan’s wasting 1000’s buks on his CS gun skin.
VR was also popular for very long in Japan now like hatsune miku ain’t even the first gen.
Like inkwell saying, Japan lives in the future

This guy was definitely watching v tubers but people spend exorbitant amounts of money on twitch streamers as well. I can admit the dopamine released from hearing your handle called out is exhilarating for a second but like all addictions it’s fleeting and you have to give more and more. Sounds like this guy had formed a parasocial bond with these streamers as well.

I really don’t understand this. I find streamers/vtubers/99% of YT impossibly boring. Like, there’s actual TV and movies if you wanna watch something. Am I just

Exactly, I use them to check out games I'm interested in or as background noise. I certainly wouldn't have an emotional investment in them. Also I watch precisely because they're free, donating tons of money kinda misses a key advantage imo.
I disagree about YT though, a bunch of quality content is available including shit, videos, and music.

I do like that cooking history guy, I only recently discovered him. There’s probably a bunch of quality media on there I should check out. It’s not as bad as it used to be, stuff has production value and scripting now. A few years back I watched some popular funny goth girl that does weird shopping hauls but I had to do it on 1.25x or 1.5x because it wasn’t engaging enough for me at regular speed, and she was one of the more successful ones. Idk I’d rather just rewatch Seinfeld or King of the Hill for background noise
YT watchers: what quality stuff should I see? Pop-sci, history, or cooking please

I don't watch really any Pop-sci, I tend to instead watch more in-depth channels that really go into the weeds.

Wow thank you!! This is really helpful, I’ll definitely check it out. I’m open to in-depth if it’s explained in layman’s terms, but I don’t have a science background so certain things would be lost on me. I do fricking LOVE science though, particularly quantum physics

Ah I tend not to be into that part of STEM, I mainly follow electronics. So I unfortunately don't really have good recommendations. Still glad I could offer some good channels in other subjects though.

They’re good mindless entertainment for when I work. Something about a 34 year old man playing wordle clones in my second monitor staves the suicidal thoughts off.
I pretty much never just sit down and watch a YouTube video or stream, I’d guess I’m in the lower 10% of my demographic in terms of active Youtube/Stream viewing.

That settles it. Don't try to hide behind principle or even your own pathetic cowardice as an excuse anymore.
You're just an evil motherlover.
Hope the pibbles get you eventually.
Or you finally realize that, yes, you DO take pleasure in causing animals pain, and in a brief moment of lucidity you relieve us of your existence with a shotgun.
Your body would be more useful to society as dog food than in it's current state.
