"We are graduating the updated button styling for vote arrows" - StackOverflow jannies seethe

The StackOverflow admins decided to make a small stylistic change to the upvote/downvote buttons after testing showed that it resulted in a 28% increase in votes. You'd expect the userbase to be indifferent at best to this small change, but no. The announcement post is on -291 and powerusers are ANGRY.

The new buttons are terrible.

:soycry:

Does the increase in votes also mean that the votes are actually indicating quality (or lack of it, in case of downvotes)? Because wrong-voting is way worse than no-voting (and I've seen a lot of wrong, low quality posts getting some upvotes).

:soycry: (wtf are they even talking about?)

they're offensively ugly.

:soycry:

Someone calls out SO's insufferable powerusers:

If StackExchange wants to increase voting, I encourage StackExchange to actively encourage kindness across its network (and the world) and explain why upvoting is a kind thing to do (and how unnecessary downvoting is a mean thing to do).

I've noticed that quite a few prominent StackExchange users have a 2:1 (or even worse) downvote to upvote ratio. These people often become community moderators, and continue their pattern of negativity. Perhaps StackExchange should start penalizing users with downvote to upvote ratios that are greater than 1:1.

That's genuinely a good idea. The powerjannies don't take kindly to this, downvoting this person's comment to the bottom of the thread and commenting:

What if the great majority of the downvotes are necessary

:soycry:

Votes are not for showing kindness, never have been. They are there for quality control.

:soycry: (this is Tinkeringbell who I've written about before [STACK EXCHANGE DRAMA] How to handle people blocking your view and breaking the rules at the theater by not sitting in their assigned seats?. She's an Interpersonal Skills powermod with 0 social skills. She follows up:

I'm not against kindness, that's why you got my downvote and a comment explaining why.

perhaps we find a shape like this leads to 4% more dramacoin per post

The best part is, since comment arrows are side-by-side, you may not remember which side is up and which is down

I've never seen a website that didn't cause a shitton of drama whenever some minor change was made. People lose their fricking minds every time for about 2 weeks and then mysteriously the drama goes away (i.e. they get used to it). Making changes on a site that's full of already uptight autists must be a headache lol

If StackExchange wants to increase voting, I encourage StackExchange to actively encourage kindness across its network (and the world) and explain why upvoting is a kind thing to do (and how unnecessary downvoting is a mean thing to do).

Nah, people don't do anything unless you make them. If they want upvotes then they need to make the site unusable somehow unless you upvote on a few things.

so your ratio sucks less than you as a person? I'd say your dad is proud of you, but he's not and you've portably never met him.

look. i love stack overflow. I'm typing this on my jeff agwood signature mechanical keyboard as we speak. I've learned so much from his great blog that he lost because he student know how to backup databases, and that he and joel spolsky, who was the predict manager for microsoft and forced excel macros because vbscript was talking too long or something and also doesn't think relational databases should have foreign keys, but hes like a trellist because of trello.anyway these guys definitely know how to make a q+a site about homework problems from like 10 years ago.

sweet buttons. and that took them a year.

They're usually overcomplicated too and the simple one liner is sitting below it at like +2 votes. Maybe it suffers from the same reddit disease where if you say a thing in a way that sounds like you know what you're talking about, people will believe it just for that.
