As a moderator of an r-slured subreddit, this week has been crazy for me. People have been pleading to help compensate us financially left and right (none actually have put money in my Cashapp unfortunately. I see mods all over the site suddenly claiming that they wouldn't be able to do their work without the essential use of bots. Who are they kidding? Eli Whitney thought that the cotton gin would end slavery, but it just increased slave's productivity. Do these mods really not realize that they're jannies and should be treated as such?

So much spam today about the black out and its all based on what users voted if they want to black out or not.
THE WHOLE POINT OF THE BLACKOUT IS TO INCONVENIENCE THE USERS TO PAY ATTENTION TO AN ISSUE. IF THE USER AGREES TO IT ITS NOT AN INCONVENIENCE THEN.
That just means mods and redditors take a day off from scrolling reddit for what, a day or two? Reddit is not going to give a shit. They've dealt with "black outs" before for even less than API access. It took a great deal of bitching to get NoNewNormal banned after some time while taking out some commie subs.

the sub I use the most has a mod that goes inactive for weeks and comes back to b-word about reports and yell at everyone (especially me!) and then disappears again. He's the only one who doesn't gaf and hasn't said anything and isn't joining this stupid blackout. Jannies that do nothing are great.

I do feel bad for iamthatis, the Apollo app is actually really fricking good. It's also his only source of income, making the app. Though, as more and more companies move away from allowing API access to their services, it remains pretty r-slurred to build a career on making a specific app that is dependent on a third-party API.

Third party apps are a big profit loss, it means you lose ad impressions, and get much less tracking data to sell.
In my opinion, they've been begrudgingly allowed by companies because they massively enhance the user experience. However, now, Reddit has, for all intents and purposes, a monopoly on the niche that was once filled by various Internet forums.
Today's Internet user will get frustrated at the thought of signing up for each forum they want to post on, and with RSS effectively dead, you can't really aggregate content from a variety of places.
The end result is a massive push toward centralization, which results in effective monopolies on the part of social media. Essentially, companies like Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook are only going to get worse in their treatment of users.
Right now, though, it's really fricking hilarious to see Reddit jannies mad. Considering that they're part of the reason that Reddit post-2017 is shit, it's well deserved.
