It is easier to become an oppositely-aligned extremist than it is to become moderate, because there is a certain mindset endemic to all extremism. I think the nazis and commies both considered each other less of a threat than the democrats.

Yeah, the social democrats were arguably the closest major group ideologically to them but communists around the world were operating under the doctrine that fascism = late stage capitalism and anyone not already a βgoodβ commie was a fascist. They actually thought the SPD was the biggest threat in Germany like you said, leading to collaboration between the KPD and the Nazis (their leaders were commonly seen at rallies together).
