Pournelle was an absolute shit-tier author who rode on the coat-tails of Larry Niven (co-author of the only decent book with Pournelle's name on it) and made Bobby Heinlein seem like Robert Graves.
His singular achievement was, along with Niven, persuading Ronald Reagan that space lazers were an actual thing. And he may have helped persuade Arthur C. Clarke to frick off and go diddle kids in Sri Lanka. Not so great for underage curries, I guess.

I assume you're referring to Mote in God's Eye as the riding GOAT work. I'd suggest Lucifer's Hammer also. He's still a gay rightoid but a fun author for 1980s apocolypse fiction. If it's the opposite I'd suggest the other for being fun evolutionary ficiton

Actually I never read Lucifer's Hammer. All the good stuff in Mote (i.e. the aliens) really feels like Niven wrote it.
