When your site is new r/deadBIPOCs seems like a who cares sub. When it's mainstream everything sucks. It happens to every franchise and series in existence.

Why do people keep saying that? Reddit was already fairly mainstream (certainly mainstream enough to get journos interested) when the very first sub drama happened - r/jailbait, which was in the grey area even legally. It took years for them to start outright sanitising it, and self-congratulatory reports on how many subs/accounts were banned started happening very recently. It was a deliberate pivot. Think like what ruqqus tried to do, but with less insane userbase and over the course of quite a few years.

Reddit didn't ban any subs the first like 4 years it existed and no one knew the site existed. It was definitely not mainstream.

Heck reddit had a subreddit for fake ids called r/fakeid for fraud called fraudnet for shoplifting for scamming with 100k+ subscribers and an active blackmarket up until recently when they did a mass purge 2-3 yrs ago
