What's funny is that the chinx rationally explains why they have to be harsh on drug smuggling and how that came to be and plebbitors just go "you are brainwashed bro". Literally invalidating the lived experiences of a POC. Or maybe Chinx are white now whatever.

What's funny is that the chinx rationally explains why they have to be harsh on drug smuggling

That's not really it, his explanation is kind of lame and somewhat nonsensical - it's not like they're executing thousands each year. Chinx are harsh on drugs for historical reasons - they've been militarily turned into a nation of junkies by Anglos for the sake of balance of trade, and it had some effects that really weren't pretty. After they could finally tell Anglos to frick off, they took a rather dim view of any and all narcotics.

(vaguely know this from two palladium articles) even more recently in china drugs were both part of their “corrupt corporate conspiracy culture” Xi disliked and also a source of support for criminal groups his enemies were pals with, like 1 decade ago

That part I don't know, but Chinx were harsh af on drugs for like the last century fairly consistently. Also this is mostly about Singapore, these Chinx don't really care about Xi's opinion...

The nationalists who run Taiwan were also selling drugs to finance rebellion against the CCP in western regions up through the 70s.

The golden triangle you always hear about was run by ethnic Chinese.

Singapore is mostly Chinese, so they have the same outlook on stuff and (if I'm not mistaken) suffered from the same problems in the late 19th century.

Sort of. Anglos brought a bunch of Chinx and Sexy Indian dudes to the island for their own reasons when they owned all of Malaysia.

Will Asia ever live off the fact they got owned by the Bongs of all people? Imagine growing up in 2070s first world China or something and learning that you were fricking owned by an island full of subhumans that can't figure our dental health care.

China wasn't owned by bongs, just screwed over by them (who wasn't?). A large part of Asia (South-East) was owned by frogs, too, and then there was Dutch East Indies in Indonesia.

That's a pretty... misleading view of opium usage in China. The Bongs forced the Qing to allow them to trade opium into China, they didn't force the Chinese to take them. Opium was, historically, taken by upper-class Chinese. It became popular with the middle and lower classes during the late Qing period and there was a huge demand for import from India. The Bongs and other Western nations wanted in on the action and brought opium cultivated in India and sold them to the Chinese. The Qing governmment tried to ban the use and trade of opium but both didn't succeed, thus the Opium wars. Even during the period when the Bongs were selling opium to China, the homegrown opium market was growing rapidly and didn't stop until the CCP came to power. My point here is that the Bongs weren't enacting some evil plan to turn Chinese into junkies (even though they knew about the addictive effects of opium), they were just attracted by the prospect of making profits on the Chinese demand which already existed before they came. Even if they couldn't trade opium to the Chinese, I highly doubt the weakening Qing government could have banned the rise of China-grown opium. Blaming the Bongs for their social ills is just classic Chinese cope, just like their nonsense about the "century of humiliation".

As for Singapore, I'm not sure why you tried to link them with Chinese history. Singaporean Chinese don't really identify with the mainlanders. The reason for their harsh treatment of drug traffickers isn't due to some historical trauma. It's mostly due to pragmatic reasons. Aside from the obvious moral and social issues, drug addiction also robs the country of productive workers. Since Singapore has no natural resources, its human capital is all-important. The Redditor was also right in that Singapore used to be a hub for drugs. It was a distribution center for opium under colonial rule and later on, a lot of heroine was trafficked through and into Singapore as well. The heroine problem became so bad in the 70s that the government started a, sort of, war on drugs. The mandatory death penalty for drug traffickers was passed due to the government's Confucian belief in the effectiveness of harsh deterrence in eliminating undesirable behaviours. Seems to have mostly worked. :marseyshrug:

Also, I'm not sure why you think Singapore doesn't execute a lot of people. They have one of the higher execution-per-capita rates in the world, most of it for drug trafficking.

yeah, i reckon the "baddest" part in terms of crime and shady stuff would be the red light district but it's really mild

the migrant worker dorms and rental flats come to mind when it comes to the squalor kind of bad

Those migrant worker dorms look like prison cells.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

yeah, the tragic part is that it took a covid outbreak (and probably an election) last year for improvements to the dorms and I think they're still not allowed to venture out because of covid even today, so it's literally a prison. the dorm thing's pretty much a racket and the owners were cheapening out on everything I think. construction's pretty fricked, new constructions of those apartment looking things are badly delayed, i managed to ballot for a new unit but i've no idea when construction would even start but it's not that big of a problem for me. most other young couples are badly affected by it though since land is really scarce here and without their own housing they probably stay with their parents and hence would be less likely to have kids and stuff

The issue in this case is that the punishment isn't applied consistently. That doesn't mean Sing Sing should get rid of the death penalty for drugs, it means they need to execute rich weedbros too

i can only remember 1 rich weedbro who got caught here: https://channelnewsasia.com/singapore/metro-founders-grandson-ong-jenn-longer-jail-sentence-drugs-917156

but i think generally you'll have to be pretty dumb to get caught, this guy tried to buy weed without any intermediateary parties for protection
