โ€œTheir not ready for itโ€ can be used to defend and justify any sort of backward thinking and unjust institutions including slavery, racism and sexism. Iโ€™m sure the abolition of slavery was not conceivable for several generations of people with โ€œconservativeโ€ values but that did not make it justifiable or stop it from being unjust.
