This is very true, but on the other hand only one side is paralyzed by mindless contrarians in their own party who oppose everything out of spite.

When the chips are down, :marseyaoc: shuts up and gets in line to vote (and gets reamed for it by lefty twatter rslurs) whereas Matt Gaetz basically is a rightoid twatter rslur.

The system of American government has undergone an unplanned and unforeseen structural change that the Framers never anticipated.

Modern computer-assisted gerrymandering has become so pervasive that almost all elections for congress are effectively single-party appointments. The only voters that matter in a gerrymandered district are primary voters. Where parties used to punish fringe "spoiler" candidates who could not win in a general, those are now the only candidates who can win a sit, the far-out nutjobs who piss off everyone except for hardcore primary voters, especially in gerrymandered house seats. Reaching across the aisle to accomplish things is a sure ticket to losing in most districts, especially on the GOP side, as we see here.

This has created a dysfunctional congress that no longer legislates, but instead is basically a long-form reality show for the purposes of marketing reelection campaigns. In civics class, they used to teach that Congress writes the laws, POTUS oversees execution of the laws, and SCOTUS answers questions of legal interpretation.

We now have a government where Congress bickers and occasionally passing continuing resolutions, but almost never actually writes or modifies laws. Instead, the Executive branch makes the law through administrative rules, and SCOTUS rewrites anything they don't like. All of the hot-button SCOTUS cases from recent years have not been about SCOTUS interpreting legislations passed by congress, they have been SCOTUS overruling executive actions, or administrative rules, or SCOTUS versus SCOTUS cases, where they overturn prior court rulings.

This is not the system that was ever intended or designed in the constitution, it's an artifact of two-party, winner-take-all politics where representatives are able to choose their own voters with computer-assisted gerrymandering.

They need a neutral open source anti-gerrymandering algo to do redistricting, but no politico will ever back such a thing, so it will never happen.

Yeah, it's like DHS checkpoints at airports.

Nobody could ever successfully hijack a plane with boxcutters ever again after 9/11, but from now until forever, there will perpetually be thousands of above-median-productivity workers, at any given moment, standing in line waiting to take their shoes off, or separating their shampoo into 3oz bottles, etc. Just a permanent drag on the economy forever, a pointless foot on the brake, nevermind all the deadweight salary and benefits paid to TSA workers to feel up and steal from citizens.

There is like an eternal ratchet of American politics that always moves towards giving the state police more power, and always moves towards party over country.

Interesting that the press are playing down that the other party also voted him out, despite him being more open than most to working with them.

I guess it's a vote for drama, rather than the Dems actually hoping for this to aid them.

This was exactly the right play for the dems tbh

McCarthy's ouster is proof that Gaetz's club will brook no compromise at all, about anything. So the dems have absolutely nothing to gain by trying to keep McCarthy, who had to promise to be under Gaetz's thumb to keep his job, and who broke that promise. McCarthy was a dead man walking from the moment he partnered with democrats, it's not like he was going to switch sides to start partnering with dems more, after all this.

So what happens next is either the GOP votes lockstep to let Gaetz's club control the speaker, which is just a continuation of the status quo, or else a tiny handful of republicans in swing districts could take on immense power by voting with the democrats. The democrats have nothing to lose, by allowing the GOP to devour itself. If Gaetz controls who is speaker, then they will have no voice no matter who it is. But there is a chance of Gaetz losing control of the speakership, and even a very slim chance of the next speaker being someone who wins with a majority of their votes coming from the democrat side.

McCarthy needed 15 votes to get his seat, and caved to literally every single thing that Gaetz's club demanded, including this ridiculous rule that inevitably got him ousted. Now Gaetz needs to find an even jellier spine, somewhere in the GOP. His biggest risk is that 5 or 6 republicans in swing districts decide that voting for a moderate democrat speaker is less-dangerous than participating in an extended repeat of the loyalty-testing shitshow from last time.

Dems have nothing to lose, here. They don't have a great hand, and little chance of winning anything, but they were already all-in with 9-3 off-suit before this, so there is no reason to fold before the river, at this point.

No, you can't just make a deal to become speaker that promises you'll get rid of pork in bills, not use an omnibus or a CR, or kowtow to Dems for votes to do business as usual and then break the agreement, send billions more to Ukraine with no oversight, cave on a CR to give Dems all they want, fail to do anything with the border on HR 2, fail to do the regular order on budget bills, drag your feet on oversight, and expect to keep your job.

If Dems had balls instead of corporate taxolib homocrat overlords, they'd have done this to Pelosi eons ago.

We call upon Reddit to take action against the rampant Coronavirus misinformation on their website.

Everyone on this planet has been affected by the SARS-Cov-2/Coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic. You may have been in lockdown, you may have been forced to work under some form of duress, you may have lost a loved one to the disease, you may be left with long term side effects of the illness, you may have found that regular food, housing, and/or medical care is less attainable or more expensive now.

We could have been better off months ago, but disinformation and lies have been allowed to spread readily through inaction and malice, and have dragged this on at the cost of lives. There are those who deny that the pandemic even exists, there are those who think that wearing a mask will literally suffocate you, there are those who think it's no worse than a regular flu virus, that it's a bioweapon, and everything in between. This volume of blatant misinformation is problematic and dangerous.

It is clear that even after promising to tackle the problem of misinformation on this site, nothing of substance has been done aside from quarantining a medium sized subreddit, which barely reduces traffic and does little to stop misinformation.

The disinformation and false information is manifold. There is no area of recognised safety procedures when it comes to battling the spread of a dangerous virus that is not under attack here. All empirically proven measures which can help save lives are under attack. Masks work1 , but not according to the propaganda. **The vaccine is safe,**2 it is not untested, and it is not experimental technology or DNA manipulation, but people getting their information from these propaganda subreddits are told the opposite. Social distancing is valuable3 , but people are being persuaded to not even do that. Cynical plays on emotion are made. Trying to keep children safe is painted as "child abuse". Lies are repeated so frequently that misinformed people begin to believe them wholeheartedly, trusting that they can't be incorrect because they're surrounded by people who believe it also.

There needs to be a more active involvement in preventing the spread of the disinformation that is keeping us within a pandemic that at this point is entirely manageable. The main problem with a concerted disinformation campaign is that such a message attains an air of legitimacy through sheer volume of repetition. This is dangerous when it comes to unsafe medical advice such as promoting the ingestion or injection of cattle dewormers, a known side effect of which is sudden death4 , or such as trying to convince people that a tested, FDA approved vaccine will cause death. There is a good chance that the disinformation that reddit is currently inundated with will necessitate people a stay at the toxicology department in the hospital or even cost them their lives. There can be no room for leniency when people are dying as a result of misinformation on this platform. Reddit as a global platform needs to take responsibility here.

We are calling on the admins to take ownership of their website, and remove dangerous medical disinformation that is endangering lives and contributing to the existence of this ongoing pandemic.

Subreddits which exist solely to spread medical disinformation and undermine efforts to combat the global pandemic should be banned.
