The term “Asian Americans” is way too bigotedly generic, inbred, and arcane. It really is. The experiences of Americans with Japanese American heritage, the motivation for originally coming to America, not to mention cultural norms and expectations are quite different in many ways from the Chinese American experiences, motivations, culture, can be entirely different from Indian Americans' experiences, etc. Ironically the common denominators that these distinct ethnicities share is a strong work ethic and the fear of their success and ensuing discriminatory ceilings they face. I'd press these admin who claim “there are too many Asian students receiving awards” to recheck their understanding of racial sensibility, and ideally by or in front of the media. Is it an issue of “too many Asians” receiving accolades when a Filipino American student, two Chinese American students (one Taiwanese heritage and one Hmong), one Iranian American student, one Saudi Arabian, one Indian American, one Sri Lankan American, two Korean students, one Thai and one Japanese American student, the 4th generation descendent of the Manzanar Internment camp, a Tansei, all receive awards? The fact that the powers that be see all of these students as the same and collectively as “too many” should send chills down your spine.
