Reports on it have not been good all along, and when you think about it - the movie which was supposed to be Captain Marvel 2 - the sequel being rejigged to have two other co-stars and now it's The Marvels? Not a good sign. Brie Larson sure didn't help things with all her pissing and moaning after the first movie, but even that managed to make a billion.
Disney and Marvel (heck, all the studios) need big returns nowadays because making and marketing movies is so expensive. If it doesn't make a billion back, then you've lost money and wasted your time. Even worse, it looks like another turkey in a string of turkeys ('but the remade Little Mermaid made $569 million all told, so it wasn't a flop!' No, those numbers are a flop nowadays) and that's not good at all for Disney.
