but never actually book through it

i.e., use Kayak to find your hotel, but then always go direct to the hotel site to (98% of the time) get a rate thats at least $1 less

Same with flights - the boat site will help you cross reference every possible airline for the cheapest combo, but sometimes you get some really wild connections. Like, arrive in minnesota via alaskan air, go to bag claim then go back thru security and check your bag again and take a spirit air hop to Dallas, bag claim + security + check your bag again with southwest, then fly to [redacted]. All to save ~$100 at the cost of adding 6 hours to your trip from kansas to atlanta, which would have been only like 2.5 hours if you flew direct.

Back when i was working in radio, I would do this all the time to the call-in winners.
