EFFORTPOST Some Racist comics from 1920s Afrikaans children's magazines.

Yo guys I've been scouring the internet and GOOGLE FRICKING SUX BIG DONKEY BALLZ

holy actual frick, can any of you dramaatrds verify if Google has actually become fricking worse in the past 2 years, like oh my god, it's getting worse and worse and harder and harder to find old ancient articles for longposting

And searching in non english language is a futility to find useful crap, unless you already know primary sources or are plagiarizing wikipedia, good God Google fricking sucks

Like holy actual ungodly fuuck, I was under the dreadful fear that I had forever lost the search i had made a month ago in November about the subjectmatter i was researching, cuz i couldn't fricking find them again

I had to resort using the history search, lucky for me, I dint know u could do that, cuz i desperately wanted to make this specific series of Longposts about the Swape :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseysweating: :marseyemojismilemouthcoldsweat: :marseyemojismilemouthcoldsweat: :marseyemojismilemouthcoldsweat: :marseyemojismilemouthcoldsweat: :marseyemojismilemouthcoldsweat: :marseyemojismilemouthcoldsweat: :carpsweating: :carpsweating: :carpsweating: :carpsweating: :carpsweating: :carpscared: :carpscared: :carpscared: :carpscared: :carpscared:

ANyways, as I've been researching for a longpost about ancient afrikaans literature and folkstales about the famous Swape or Swapians,

and I came across the following document printed 30 years ago in some archive,

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17029287506815073.webp

Basically a historic archive document printed in 2000, a reprint from 1989, about the usefulness of Old children's magazines from europe and south african whitoids, in terms of their ability to determine the "waardes en gesindhede van die gemeenskap in die bepaalde tyd", or the values and morals of a community and society of the particular timeframe upon which they were printed.

The reason being, because a child's magazines tended to be more earnest and honest about a culture's self worth, as the primary goals of children's magazines were to "inligting oor te dra; oordra van inligting geskied noodwendig vanuit 'n bepaalde lewens- en wereldbeskouing"

Or in other words, historians can more earnestly determine what a society in a particular timeframe deemed most important, as that was what was deemed important enough to teach children so that the community's knowledge could be transferred to the next generation.

Anyways long boring stories shorter (by kaamrev standards), I've found some old cartoons and the oldest afrikaans magazines

https://i.rdrama.net/images/170292875119752.webp

Here is the oldest Child's magazine printed in proto-afrikaans, and the oldest child's magazine in south africa, the 1st print, in 1876.

It was called: Ons Klyntji, or as would be spelled in the post national standardization of Afrikaans in 1925, Ons Kleintjie, or "Our Little One"

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1702928751361137.webp

It involved the spelling of Afrikaans in the interim manner in which dutch was spelled in the 19th century, it is important to note that though the spelling in 1870 was very similar to modern dutch, the pronouciation of afrikaans words in 1870 was already much different, which is why a national standardization was called for in 1925.

and so on

But what REALLY REALLY REALLY made me want to share my findings with you dramatards, is the following cartoon I found from an child's magazine found in the 1920s - 1930s :carptroublemaker: :carptroublemaker: :carptroublemaker:    :marseytroublemaker: :marseytroublemaker: :marseytroublemaker:

Holy actual hells and actual fricks lmoa :marseyxd: :marseyxd: :marseyxd:

You guys ever see something so racist, it just slaps :carpslap: :smackfish: you in the face, and wakes you straight up :marseypikachu2: :marseypoggers: :marseybeanflushed: :wat:

This comic for afrikaans teenagers was apparently a monthly publishing for a youth magazine, and featured the comedic misadventures of negroe caricatures, in the yank blackface style, which they obviously copied from burgerland in their contemporary view of blacks at the time

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17029287520130553.webp

Like the big-lipped stereotype is the LEAST racist thing about the comic lol, there were other's but they were so poor quality scanned, I couldn't even see shit

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17029287520679824.webp

the comic is near incomprehensible even to me, because they are using accent and onomatopoeia of how afrikaans words were stereotypically said by native black peeps (much of which is said in the same manner in the modern day as well), but it's still hard to follow WTF :marseywtf: :marseyhelp: :marseywtf2: :marseyjohnson: is going on and what the joke is supposed to be

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17029287522186983.webp

I think :marseyhmm: :marseythinkorino: :grugthink: :marseygigathonk: :carphmmm: the joke is supposed to be as follows:

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17029287524244435.webp

The two racially-depicted black men is our lovable idiots, and today their antics is to try and scare their friend by painting the one guy's face white to make them think he's a ghost :marseyghostkiss: :marseyghost2:

The plan immediately backfires however, when the painted guy immediately starts to scream that his face is on fire, and he runs in pain.

The final panel reveals that they had used lime instead of white paint to paint his face, with the poor soul dunking his head in a can of water or whatever. Their accents are turbo racist and their words r-slurred.

Don't worry it doesn't get funny even if you understand the context :marseyunamused: :marseyunamused: :marseyunamused:
