I'm not even that great with stats, but this thread is embarrassing. When your sample has a lot of low numbers, that tends to drag down the mean, also known as the average. So life expectancy at a given time and place being in the vicinity of ~30 does not mean that most people just up and dropped dead at thirty, and it certainly doesn't mean that most females experienced menarche at the age of seven in reaction to a high rate of infant mortality.
