Edit Logging User Poll

Aevann mentioned he'd put the edit logging feature to a site vote. Figure I'll get some truescore out of it since he's letting it sit for a bit

The Feature

As implemented right now, if you edit a comment or post more than three minutes after making it, the Edit tag turns into a hyperlink leading to the full text of every previous version of the comment. The Author of the comment, as well as Jannies, can click this and read all versions of your comment.

Why care?

This makes removing information from the website even more impossible, on top of a previous update that shortened the seven day grace period to edit a comment or post to THREE DAYS. Click here to find out the type of person you could be giving unretractable information to.

Being in your position means you can't give everyone what they want. I still think it's more negative than positive to hold onto the feature.

What does the site gain with edit logging? It seems like it makes the jannies work harder policing things that have been removed already. Just seems like more liability to the site overall without actually adding much drama. If I post the wrong thing previously, I can just deal with it if i notice 3 minutes and 1 second later.

as someone who has made some very regrettable posts and comments while inebriated, i would initially concur - but if I forget to delete or edit it the next day, I deserve all the scorn for my r-slurred sins

What was the reason for making it so all jannies can read edit history?

idk why we are discussing this here, but what the site needs is an immutable audit log that's only visible to @A and similar level admins, so that we don't find ourselves in a bad situation where we host child porn and have no idea who uploaded it because they deleted that comment. Having that will remove all sorts of r-slurred pressures on other features. So suddenly edit log is entirely harmless because admiggers can a) delete the comment for real, including all edits, but b) still provide it to law enforcement.

Hosting images with no onsite presence is dumb and eroding user control over their content shouldn't be the answer to it.

>https://i.rDrama.net could be hosting CP and we'd never be able to know!

So don't host images removed from the site??

That's nontrivial to implement. And I'm not sure it should be implemented. And I think that having an audit log only accessible to admins with filesystem access is a better solution.

But ok, @A consider this btw, and make deleting comments work for real ffs one way or the other.

Not to mention it's not a good storage practice to hold onto unused, unsorted, unsearchable files that are by definition unwanted AND backed up.

What about a temporary edit log? For example: Edits made within the first 3 minutes aren't logged. Every edit made past the grace period is visible for 3 days (or whatever amount of time), then disappears. After all edit logs for the post/comment disappear only the usual edited tag remains.

This way users can still maintain a level of privacy, but can't immediately edit to avoid scrutiny if they post something naughty or r-slurred.
