when i worked for a big multimillion dollar VC moneypit app company in the UK/EU a few years ago, the only thing I ever got told off for was for offhandedly raising the possibility that i might be able to work late to finish something. i got taken aside by my (french) team lead and told never to do that again, especially not in front of the juniors. meanwhile if you wanted to get ahead you could work late of your own volition and the company would reward you for it.
the US does have insane pay but the conditions are also insane

If people start working overtime because they're late on a project, it's just gonna hide from management the fact that the team is lacking in manpower. The day these guys leave, all of a sudden the whole team is falling behind.
It's especially bad because labor costs are really high here and employers are already reluctant to hire new folks. If you give them any reason not to, they won't.
It can be necessary from time to time but overall, if it can't be done working normal hours, then it just means you need more people. Asking people to work overtime is not a fix, it's just gonna lead to more stress, more burnouts, less productivity and people leaving - the exact opposite from what you want.

I work this much in a job that involves traveling around and wrangling wagies.
Its worse during the holidays because the corpos start showing up randomly and trying to get me on shit so i have to play defense in like 6 stores because theyre r-slurred.
I worked 22 days straight leading up to easter lol.
I cant imagine killing myself over it.
