Let's be honest...non playoffs NBA is more of a spectacle than a sport..especially since their started trying to make it mostly offensively oriented

Yeah college sports are kinda an exception. I mean sure there's plenty of fans who have no actual association with whatever university they're cheering for. But I'd bet that most of the fans either attended that university (past or present) or have friends/family who did. That's why they watch them.
That just doesn't really apply to professional sports. I mean sure you could argue that everybody who lives in ie. Chicago has some sense of comradery for the Chicago Sky (lmao I had to look up the name of our WNBA team), but not really.
I still remember one of my apparently more chuddy coworkers when the USA team was playing in the Women's World Cup. He was a big soccer fan and played recreationally too, so he knew how the game worked. And hsi comments were fricking hilarious. "Why are they so slow?" / "How did they miss that??" / "What on earth was that play?". It became clear to me that even the absolute best female soccer players in the world were still SO far behind male players in terms of ability - not just physical strength, speed, and endurance, but also coordination, play making, etc. - that it really is just a worse form of the male tournament.

There are sports where I genuinely enjoy watching the women's game as its own thing. Golf is probably the best example βΒ the drive length, clubhead speed, etc. of women's golf is much closer to my own which makes it somewhat interesting to watch. Not that I'm some chauvinistic r-slur boasting about how I could dominate on the LPGA bc I have an extra 20 yds off the tee (I would get whooped ofc) but it's sometimes cool to watch players who are playing a game I can understand vs. men's golf where it's a whole different universe.
That's in contrast to sports where I watch it and it's clearly just an inferior version of the men's game. Like I enjoyed watching women's March Madness bc of the storyline, and the games were pretty entertaining, but it's also pretty obvious that the high school team I played on would have been at least competitive.
