From what i've heard the usual reason the aboriginals want to close off these places are because they contain male only sacred sites and they don't want women any where near them (based?) because the traditional punishment for an aboriginal woman that gets close to a male only sacred site is on the spot execution, even if its by accident. This specific Mt. Warring closure the commenter was going on about is making Aboriginal women seethe especially because it means their own womens sacred site on the mountain will now be off limits to them due to the ban(lmao)

The War Memorial is unironically very good to visit, one of the best ones I've seen in the world. If you're into art galleries and museums there's lots in Canberra.
Outside, there's some great wineries around Murrumbateman and if you don't mind a 2.5 hour drive you can get to Koziuscko National Park which is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. You'll be there in snow season too which is always nice.
