At least in the Midwest, Chicago and Detroit, are moving very quickly to including a 20% tip.

So instead of just making everything a 19% VAT you're getting 20%.

Chicago also started adding a 4% service charge that you have to request be removed from the bill to help servers with health care and some other bullshit.

So not only do they print up a new bill after I request to have an "opt out" charge removed, but I'm pissed that poors are trying to take more of my money.

I def seethed about the 4% bullshit and seeing someone put the options "25% / 28% / 30%" on their Square for a suggested tip.

The servers and bartenders aren't even real poors. You go to some fast food place, yeah, that's poors trying to take your money, but you go to some quarter way decent restaurant that already does tips and the servers and bartenders are making bank (relatively speaking) doing less than the fast food wagies, most of them play acting working class hero.

Tips getting eliminated probably wouldn't make anything cheaper for the consumer because business would just jack up the prices to pay their tip workers more and skim the true difference, but all the servers and bartenders would be brought down to elevated wagie level where they belong. The seethe would be supreme.

It's not about the price, they could increase prices 20% and people wouldn't care and would still go to the "quarter way decent restaurant".

It's about

  • tacking on a 20% (minimum) tip

  • another 4% "service charge"

If there's anything consumers despise it's being nickel and dimed.

Had they just increased the prices 20% and eliminated tipping consumers would feel like they won something.

Imo tacking on tax, 20% tip and 4% service charge is what causes max seething.
