This was ONE book, in ONE class, because ONE child was being bullied for not conforming to the gender everyone believed they (I don't know the specifics of the child, so am using βtheyβ as a gender neutral, singular pronoun, as is a common usage of the word βtheyβ) should.
A child. A real, live, feeling, six year old child didn't fit into the socially acceptable box. So other children made them miserable. The teacher, an educational expert, decided to address this in an age-appropriate manner. Because this is a hot-button topic (stupidly. It shouldn't BE an issue), the school informed the parents of the children in that class, giving them a link to the book, and allowing them to opt out of the lesson.
One parent decided that his child was too dumb, or too delicate to understand that, βsometimes, you don't know how to address someone. So, you can always ask. Or, they might tell you. Once you know, it is kind to do it the way they would prefer.β
That isn't sexual. That isn't trying to βcorruptβ young minds. It's literally trying to understand that sometimes, you should just be kind and respectful of someone, even if you don't understand how or why they are different.

It's gonna blow your mind to learn that it's in elementary school when students, with their parent's consent, have their first s*x education courses.
Kids are smarter than you think when it comes to more rudimentary stuff like this. It's honestly the right time to get in front of them: before bodies start changing, before people might want to take advantage or abuse them, etc. S*x and gender are a much better compliment of educational topics than the "s*x, drugs (DARE), gang (GREAT)" combo many of us got in the early 90s.
