My naughty media is stored on an encrypted external drive.

There's nothing illegal or immoral or fetishy on it, really just regular stuff that is harder to find now that every porn site is overrun with fats, :!marseytrain:s, incest fetish, 28 year old "schoolgirls" in neon glasses, and 40 year olds with horrible boob jobs making sneering faces.

It's on an external drive so I can control when it's accessible.

It's encrypted so when I die suddenly, nobody can go through my stuff and be like "oh so THAT'S what he's into". I don't care how vanilla it is, I don't want people seeing what exactly tripped my trigger.

I find my encrypted external drives die spontaneously every few years. You have any good recommendations?

Can you even run professional data recovery on a 500gb partition encrypted with TrueCrypt or whatever

I didn't keep anything illegal on it, just personal pictures, writing, old photoshop projects whatever. But I feel like walking into a shop and going "uhh, can you data salvage this 500gb encrypted drive sir" is gonna put me on a list

I don't access it that much. It's some random SSD off eBay.

For my actual "projects, movies, family photos" backup drive, it's cheap enough to buy two drives and sync them regularly.

As far as recovery, I'd imagine it would need to be some bit-level recovery rather than something that tries to recover from the FAT.
