Man I would have done absolutely anything for an Ivy League education. These kids are pissing it away.

I would have loved to study math.

As it stands, I don't really even understand ramanujan sums or the motivation behind them. Like I get what they do, sure. But maybe if I'd gone to college I'd understand why.

Lol these kids aren't studying STEM, ivy league has communication majors too

Number theory is beautiful.

If you have some free time can you try reading about it on your own?

Yeah man that's how I know what ramanujan sums is

Ah, I was asking because of you saying

>But maybe if I'd gone to college I'd understand why.

In general what takes time about math education in college is slowly building the intuition of how different mathematical ideas fit together. I think it's reachable through self study, but it's a harder path.

It's been a very hard path and it's frustrating but rewarding. Diligent study during two hour shits at work has lent me a decent understanding of most undergrad topics, anyway. They can fire me, go find another heavy diesel tech who will work in the conditions I do. Those bastards, I should take a three hour shit every day at work.

What I lack is insight or someone to help me develop it. So, for example, I understand what the Leech lattice IS. I understand that it relates to the kissing number problem in 24 dimensions. I understand that it is somehow related to the Monster group, and I have a basic understanding of that and why it's odd.

But if you asked me to describe those links, or to describe the remarkable properties of either object, I couldn't. I can only regurgitate what I'm told, and very likely could neither prove those links nor truly understand those proofs.

That is where I find I have reached my limitations insofar as learning mathematics on my own.

Crazy idea:

Try and see if there are math conferences planned at a university near you. Some of the time you can just show up and watch the talks and even talk to people afterwards, and the lack of invitation just means you won't get lunch.

"Could you provide some intuition for _______?" is a common question the professional !math dorks ask each other. It's not like they'll answer any arbitrary math question you can think of, but explaining what they're working on and how they thought of it is part of the fun of a conference.

I should probably do that. I'm a giga ruralcel. I've actually had good luck literally just googling β€œmath professor topic name” and emailing them. They don't seem to give a shit who I am.

Math teachers and students are generally pretty friendly!

Your local small time research university probably has a teacher or two that could give you basic research problems, the kind of things you hand out to undergrads doing internship to get them used to research.

I admire your discipline, I'm personally a huge brainlet and I would have found studying math on my own difficult.

I dunno if I'm neurodivergent or if they're just some brand of neurodivergent I find endearing. I love how apolitical and focused most of them are. Not math, not interesting, you know? I'm several hours away from any university, unfortunately. And probably at least a master's degree away from solving anything good.

Maybe it wasn't discipline. Maybe it's just autism. Idk.

Any book recommendations for math that is abstract but teaches at a calculus series level by chance? I was an A student and former TA but dropped my double major due to illness. I feel like a dummy admitting where I tap out educationally this publicly but I do want to get back into my second best area of study, even if it's just for myself  :marseyscared:

10000% baby Rudin. If you can do calc well, then you can get through it. You may want some sort of basic bridge to abstract or proofs study beforehand but that's not really strictly necessary.

Calculus won't help you at all with it, but baby Rudin will teach you the very basics of the underpinnings of calculus. So you aren't really advancing, but going deeper and justifying what you already know. You will understand the actual theoretical basis for differentiation and integration if you do.

This is the standard undergrad real analysis text. I am very fond of it. You can learn it on your own. There's limitations, but you can.

Oddly, the best site I've found for mathematics has actually been rdrama. Here, I don't have to pretend I'm not an r-slur. So if I ask someone something they're usually happy to explain it. Most mathematicians are. Maybe that's why I studied math at all. Maybe those were the academics who didn't mind that I'm a nasty mechanic.

Hear me out.

What we need is for ANTEEFA to be bussed in to the campuses. Then the anti-antifa chuds sent in next (with full immunity).

Also, Andy NGO to ensure drama is filmed.

Nah, I'd rather they just be expelled. The universities are currently intimately tied in with these insufferable buttholes who are amazingly bad optics, and I don't want them to get out of it by letting troopers of any kind solve the problem for them.

Don't let them pretend they did what they could but ACAB, amirite students? No, force them to deal with the consequences of their staff and students believing they can pull these sorts of criminal acts because they've gotten away scot-free before.
