How many of you have visited a red (do not travel) or orange (reconsider travel) country?

For me:

  • Red: Myanmar, though it wasn't red at the time. I was a local dude's first sexual experience with a white guy. He said it was weird how my nose was so pointy compared to the local boys. Sodomy is also illegal there, so it was fun to live (slightly) dangerously.

  • Orange: Colombia. I stayed mainly on the tourist trail, so my experience was quite sanitised. Great coffee. But Cartagena was a shithole.

I did three months in Papua New Guinea on military exercise and it was an experience for sure. You'd be driving home and regularly see dead bodies on the side of the road. Some of the highland villages are warzones because of tribal conflict, they fight over access to the mines and so on. There's no public land anywhere so you have to be super careful where you go or some maniac might jump out at you with a machete. Even in their biggest cities half the neighborhoods are shantytowns.

Nice people though. Just very primitive. They hate loud voices and making eye contact so it's basically a nation of neurodivergents.
