Redditors flail about a David Brooks article [old]

https://old.reddit.com/r/democrats/comments/15qv4tl/how_america_got_mean/?sort=controversial

If you wanna see redditors throw a fit you can literally just look anywhere a david brooks article is posted. The article is about why americans have gotten meaner recently, redditors spend their time in the comment section trying to narrow down the specific cause for this (not linking all the comments becuase there are a ton):

  • "lack of time… and that goes back to the need to make money in order to survive"

  • "a small handful of people have won capitalism."

  • "Got mean? Started off mean. Taking Indian lands, then going from there."

  • Reagan

  • Rush Limbaugh

  • 2008

  • (((orange)))

  • "Newt Gingrich started it. Social media worsened it. Trump ballooned it."

  • "Low wages, high cost of living, non-existent social safety net"

  • "Fox News went live in 1996"

  • "Y'all ditched church and didn't replace it. edit: didn't help that literal Nazis took over a lot of churches"

  • Corporations broke the social contract in the early 80s

  • Neo-liberalism

  • "I wouldn't be surprised to find out that covid rewired our brains in some manner"

  • suburbs

Some choice comments:

Moral decay may be one reason, but the main reason our relationships have deteriorated is lack of time… and that goes back to the need to make money in order to survive. I have no friends, but it's because I have zero time to invest in healthy friendships… our schedules clash, we fail to speak to each other for months on end. It does make me sad when I stop to think about it, but luckily, I don't have much time for that either. The moral decay comes from the late-stage capitalist society that we live in. You cannot convince me otherwise.

americans work fewer hours nowadays than in the past, people dont make time for you because you suck

America was built on stolen land and stolen labor. It's time we acknowledged this fact and move forward to fix what we can. Denying it simply perpetuates the problems.

Corporations broke the social contract in the early 80s. Neo-liberalism has destroyed any sense of responsibility to society. It's only fitting that individuals do the same. Our society makes “Frick you, I got mine” the only logical response.

i have the same attitude, but personally i blame welfare :marseychud: soyciety never let me have any gibs. i get taxed out the butt to pay for a bunch of unproductive r-slurs in section 8 to buy the new colorway of air forces and for :marseyairquotes: disabled :marseyairquotes: autists to NEET all day gooning to pornmodded skyrim. telling me i owe society anything more is a fricking joke - i've seen how poors squander every opportunity given to them and i'm not willingly giving a single red fricking cent to "charity" ever in my life. pearls before swine if i ever saw it. don't fricking ask me to be nice.

>Agree 💯 this is a byproduct of late stage capitalism and the beginning of what causes things like the French Revolution. If I were a billionaire, I would start giving away my money immediately. At least down to $100 million.

In what communist revolution would a person with $100 million net worth be spared :marseyrofl: :marseyquestion: if I were a billionaire and I feared the French razor :marseyguillotine: I'd simply move to another country instead of decimating my wealth anyway :marseybrainlet:
