Roosevelt was pretty recent history when the monument was constructed. It'd be like if we made it today with Bill Clinton or George Bush. That must have been some decent drama when it was going up.
The best compromise on statues of slaveholding founding fathers like Washington and Jefferson would be to replace them with statues of Donald Trump.

It was commissioned by Republicans in the 20s, even republicans now don't like Bush. The least controversial president of the last 50 years was probably HW Bush, who would not get a place on the monument. I can only imagine JFK getting a spot, and he was notoriously a little dumb

I feel like LBJ is closer to a Dem Reagan. FDR knew how to coalition build with both parties as well as compromise (at least later on) with the cross-partisan opposition and was a war leader who helped mobilize and lead to victory. He also left an impression, often positive, on the parents of boomers who hold him similar light and was just generally charismatic. FDR dying in office after just about leading the country through two enormous crises and having lead for so long probably just cements that.
Those who criticize his policies today tend to still have him in high regard among them. Libertarians seem to have the biggest bone to pick with them but A) some still laud his war leadership and B) their opinions are largely worthless lmao.
