The communal apartments in the early Soviet Union used community kitchens, but post 1950s apartments (the famous commie blocks) were single-family units with a kitchen

The commies had a sane-ish reason. The early USSR was obsessed with modernity and efficiency. It's much more efficient for one person to cook for everyone than for everyone to cook their own meals. This is so obvious that even Ancient Rome had communal canteens. That the USSR infamously had food problems was all the more reason to maximize efficiency.
