Their history goes all the way back to pre-independence. The original party was Dravidar Kazhagam (which itself succeeded from previous parties) founded by a guy called Periyar. He was a respected politician and is considered father of the Dravidian movement. Due to political differences eventually one of Periyar's followers, Annadurai, split from the party and founded DMK, just after independence.

Karunanidhi was already a rising star in the party and when Annadurai suddenly passed away, he was elected to be his successor. Meanwhile, MG Ramachandran (MGR), who was a co-party member and Karunanidhi's friend for years at this point, had become a movie superstar by the time of Annadurai's death. This is when trouble began, clash of two massive egos of Karunanidhi and MGR. Their political feud led to MGR founding AIDMK. And the rest is history. The politics of the state have been ping-ponging between the two parties ever since.
