Mums blast Home Bargains for 'offensive' festive jumper 'making light of autism'

Here's the thread because bongland journos can't be fricked to link it.

I'd say don't wear it unless you're ND. I'm neurodivergent.

The issue is that the language has been appropriated by the NT community to mean a tantrum, and so now, the neurodiverse community have no language that expresses the biological phenomena that they actually experience during a “meltdown”.

Myself, I think the term 'meltdown' is offensive to the victims of nuclear reactor accidents and autists need to stop appropriating mutant culture.

I've never met an autist with a diagnosis who cares about this shit.

It's universally the parents of rslurs or people pretending to be rslurred for attention.

Sometimes people who were diagnosed with autism but are barely even autists get offended by it, but yeah it's almost always the mothers who make having an neurodivergent child their personality. The actual severe autists have bigger issues to worry about. A meltdown isn't even just an neurodivergent thing so you know that they're fishing for things to be offended by to get attention

Spreading lies on the internet and then reacting with glee when people take them seriously is no more morally defensible when the aim is to create 'drama' than it is when the aim is to smear a political opponent, undermine a political cause that costs your business money, or damage the reputation of an enemy. This 'the internet is the wild west' nonsense is a truly bizarre way to rationalise that kind of behaviour. Especially when we've seen this year how misinformation costs lives in the US and beyond. The dude who says 'in real life I am a democrat on the internet I am a misogynist blah blah' is an absolute moron. What he means is, 'on the internet I can be a misogynist, I can be a liar, and there's nothing anybody can do to stop me.' This idea that's not 'who you are in real life' is self-deluding teenage level nonsense.
