Media companies have been doing this funny thing where they b-word about other websites "stealing" their traffic/content whatever, but when those websites then stop featuring their content at all, they get even more bitter about it.

Example: in Canada they tried forcing Facebook to pay news companies everytime somebody clicked a link from Facebook. So Facebook was like "uh weird but okay" and just disabled links to news in Canada. Cue all the news agencies now upset that they saw a precipitous drop in traffic because Facebook was actually helping them

I think it would be interesting to run a survey of journ*lists on their opinion on if their job should be subsidized by the government and taxpayer. My guess is it would be a solid majority yes.

A lot of journ*lism is de facto state media already. Money is laundered in either through "grants" from government funded institutions, or the government purchases advertising at a price 3-5x the market rate and swamps the media with seatbelt and anti-drinking adverts.

There was a moment where Elon Musk's twitter was considering labeling all of New Zealand's media as State Owned Media due to the rules on the source of funding. Journ*lists become even more insufferable once they've achieved being State Media, those catty twitter shots you see come from checkmarks actually make it into print in your "local" newspaper.

Yeah in their own articles describing how social media was profiting off of their content, the journos couldn't help but paint a detailed picture of free advertising. And why the free advertising they got meant they should be installed as commissars over the mean 'brogrammers' or some other totally-not-seething line
