Because TMSC or whatever was never the reason the US recognises Taiwan. It's about preventing China from being able to blockade the Pacific the way Japan tried to do in the Second World War by keeping their navy stuck behind that rock they call Taiwan.

The US doesn't recognize Taiwan though. They don't even claim to be an independent nation, they claim to be the legitimate government of both the mainland and the island. Just like the PRC does.
