What fascinates me about RWBY is the tone. You've got these cute waif characters going through high school and the writers loved to treat them like vessels for high school drama first and foremost.
But then they go around fighting these nightmarish things all day.

So two brother gods created Remnant, one of light and one of shadow. The god of light created simple life and the god of shadow created Grimm in jealousy. That's why Grimm hate everything that the god of light had a hand in. However, the two brothers eventually learned to get along and together they made humans. The god of shadow sealed the Grimm away so they wouldn't be a problem.
The first version of humanity lived with the gods and could use magic. Salem was a powerful witch who tried to lead a rebellion against those gods. The gods took offense and killed literally everyone as punishment except Salem, who they cursed with immortality because⦠reasons. Then they left the planet after recreating humanity without magic. (But apparently god magic is sticky and humans still have some power, a semblance of magic. That's why RWBY powers are called Semblances.)
Salem wandered the world for a time before the new humanity really got settled in, and she found the Grimm sealed away. She tried to kill herself by merging with their Grimm baby gravy but ended up just looking like one
and with the power to control them. So she unleashed the Grimm on the world and began her evil plan.
The Grimm weren't actually a problem before because the god of shadow locked them up. But he forgot to do something more permanent about them because he rage quit.

Salem wants to die and she wants the gods to come back and kill her. There are four relics scattered around Remnant that if reassembled will supposedly summon the gods back to Remnant. Salem wants to frick up the world to prove to them that their experiment was a failure. She wants them to erase everything with her included.
Salem only really cared for her original civilization. She sees everyone alive now as part of some annoying epilogue.
Ozma was originally Salem's husband, and when he got sick and died, this caused Salem's vindictiveness and lack of care for her own life. She hated the gods for not bringing him back and that's why she started the rebellion.
The gods are schizo or something because the god of light did bring him back later and sent him to assuage Salem after the rebellion. The two remarried and had four daughters β I assume that's where the four maidens and maybe relics came from but it's not confirmed β but Salem then learned her daughters still had OG magic when all other humans only had Semblances. She wanted to make millions of babies and take over the world
at the expense of the new humans, but Ozma wouldn't go for it. They fought and all four daughters died trying to protect Ozma, which didn't do anything for Salem's mental health.
The god of light still wanted to leave after his brother but he didn't want the world to be completely unprotected from Salem, so he gave Ozma the ability to reincarnate and keep all his knowledge of Salem as long as he had his magic stick thing. Ozpin is just another reincarnation
and so is Oscar 
I think the four maidens are also reincarnations of the four daughters, which explains their powers. Apparently Ozma's reincarnations are born as semi-normal if chosen people and Ozma's soul sort of merges with theirs. We see this happen with Oscar. I personally think the souls of the daughters do the same with maidens but in their case there's no inherited memories.
