Still Sundown?

Don't Know

!dixie, they may not know, but I do. Given that I've never been kicked out any of the several dozen times I've been in that part of town after dark, including as recently as last month, I can confidently say it isn't currently a sundown town. Why the Heck do they think it might be? :marseyconfused:

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17192782167219605.webp

Avondale High closed almost fifteen years ago, when they realized hosting a magnet school inside a regular school was silly and turned the whole thing into the DeKalb School of the Arts. But she's talking about them removing the program? I think their first independent location was in the former Briarcliff High for a few years in the 2000s, but it was definitely there for less than a decade. Eight years, tops. And everyone knew it would be moving back and Avondale High would be closing at least a couple years in advance, so what the Heck is her timeline here? :marseyquestion:

Also, before its closure, the kids in Avondale Estates who attended public school did go to Avondale High. They now go to Druid Hills High, which is part of the DeKalb County School District, same as Avondale High was, not Decatur High, which is part of the City Schools of Decatur. That said, she's right most of the kids in Avondale Estates went to private high schools, at least post-1970s. That's part of why the non-performing arts section of the school closed. No one who could afford not to would send their kid there. :marseycosmopolitan:

She's also right that Avondale Estates is pretty white. Not 96%, though. ~80%, maybe? And that was true fifteen years ago as well, for what it's worth. But that bit about walking north on Clarendon Avenue (the name of which she got wrong)... :marseysquint:

If you go north of the school, the street is 100% residential. They'd have to walk past at least a mile of houses to get to any commercial property. And since this is about "sundown towns", they were presumably doing this at night, long after school let out. I suspect those calls to the police had very little to do with race, and a whole lot to do with unknown teenagers loitering outside a private residence in the dead of night. :marseyfellowkids:

I also don't know anything about Bosnian refugees. Pretty sure most Bosniaks in Atlanta moved here in the 1990s, which once again, makes her timeline impossible to follow. And they all live in Gwinnett, not DeKalb. Lawrenceville, specifically. :marseyflagbosnia:

If this is their standard of evidence, you could accuse any town in America of currently being a sundown town. Just pick one at random, write some bullshit, and you're good to go. :marseyoctopus2:

They were yelling fake Indian war cries, a β€˜woo woo woo' sound… As the team waited in the hallway leading from the locker room, the heckling got louder. Some fans were waving food stamps, a reference to the reservation's receiving federal aid. Others yelled, β€˜Where's the cheese?' the joke being that if Indians were lining up, it must be to get commodity cheese.

...

[One of the players] began to sing in Lakota, swaying back and forth in the jump ball circle, doing the shawl dance, using her warm up jacket for a shawl. The crowd went completely silent. ... In the sudden quiet all they could hear was her Lakota song. [She] dropped her jacket, took the ball… and ran a lap around the court dribbling expertly and fast. The audience began to cheer and applaud. She sprinted to the basket, went up in the air, and laid the ball through the hoop, with the fans cheering loudly now. Of course, Pine Ridge went on to win the game.”

This very real story says a lot about America.

During a 1983 archeological dig in Moscow, ID, an elderly woman who had lived her entire life in the town reported that when she was a child in the 1900s, (approx. 1909) β€œcowboys” ran the Chinese population out of town.

Idaho had a mountain called "Chink Peak" in a populated area up until 2001.

They renamed it to Chinese Peak and I'm shocked they didn't go with Chinaman Peak for the rename.

Heck, in 1911 there was a massacre of Chinese immigrants in Northern Mexico

But going off one old person's unsupported story is kinda sketchy

Lol one of those "possible" towns is near me. There's very few black people in rural Midwest, but you know the ones that live there. Strange cars will get pulled over by the cops, sorry that's just how it is.

Lmao, what the frick is supposed to be going on in Indiana and Ohio? And are they counting all the black people shooting each other in Illinois?

A resident of Northwest Indiana and high school teacher emailed us: β€œFor many years, there was a dance hall called the Midway Ballroom. My grandmother (and other elderly members of my family) clearly remembered a sign posted outside the dance hall that read β€œGentiles Only.” This sign would have been present during the 1930s and 1940s, when my grandmother and gradnfather were in their 20s and 30s. There still seems to be a permeable anti-black sentiment in the town, but that is purely conjecture on my part.
