holy SHIT I know a girl who talks like this and it's fricking exhausting. It's literally "you aren't listening to me because you reached a different conclusion than the one I wanted you to reach".

You say in your texts that he's interpreting your words & not listening to you. However, your texts only say what you DON'T mean and not what you DO mean. Your post doesn't say what your "words" are either. It does sound like you're asking him to prioritize you & your kids over his dogs because you don't feel the same about his dogs and maybe want help with your kids. It does sound like he spends more time with you than his dogs, and that doesn't seem to be enough for you. If he's got his time split in too many directions, the time with his dogs is probably necessary for him. I agree with /u/DudeWheresMyPotStash that you don't want to give him that ultimatum.
