Apple is actually the bad guy on this one. RCS is functionally the same as iMessage but it's vendor-neutral, and Apple has repeatedly publicly announced that they will never support it explicitly in order to "protect their brand" (keep the blue/green bubble divide). i.e., they refuse to implement RCS just so that their users can continue being obnoxious about their choice of smartphone brand.
I am an iToddler myself but I really hate apple for this.
Pixels and samsung whatevers have all had RCS for years so texting between two non-shit tier androids is comparable to texting between iphones and has been for some time now. Delivery receipts, read receipts, non-rslurred image size support, no per-message character limit, etc.

Most Android vendors (but more importantly carriers) didn't want to use RCS. It's not a particularly good standard, it was designed-by-committee with an overly complex spec that Google only cares about as a last ditch effort due to them fricking up messaging a billion times.
RCS was almost considered DOA because it requires essentially "free" cloud storage on the part of cellular companies, alongside new infra that they're not being paid for (this is a replacement for SMS which is effectively free).
It got resuscitated by Google after they centralized it on their own infra, which they don't let third-party messaging apps interface with.

Anybody who wants read receipts is wrong. I disabled RCS immediately, it's not like it matters if a text gets broken into 3 separate texts. If it's critical they all stay together, I'll attach a small file to convert it to mms.

Given I've used both on and off for the last decade and a half, I'm debating switching back to the Pixel since RCS is coming in iOS 18.
The normie fears the nerdcel and their new ability to message over IP.
My Pixel 2 was my favorite phone I've ever owned. Moto X 2013 right behind it. It rustles my jimmies when people say blue bubbles and green bubbles because they're too stupid to understand the underlying technology and how Apple has intentionally crippled it.
Side note for other fellow iOS users, you know the putrid default green sms color, change that in the accessibility settings to high contrast to save your eyes.

obsessing over the OS UIs is kinda dumb, they mostly converged on the same thing. The main value prop is the apps and iOS 100% has better app UIs across the board, just like OSX>Windows
the only real reason to use Android is to use jailbroken OSs so you can get adblocking or w/e, but I pay for Youtube cuz I use it constantly so I really dont have any use for it. And I despise the idea of having to constantly install new 3rd party OS every time an update comes out and hope the Phone isnt locked down in some random cryptic way. The whole thing is just a burden in my memory

I was perfectly willing to put up with the hassle of manually flashing updates on rooted androids until google started arbitrarily breaking support for certain apps on rooted phones to discourage people from rooting. To me the entire point of using an android was having the ability to run whatever software or firmware I wanted so when google started making that impossible I said frick this and got an iphone.
I'm still bitter about it. I dislike apple for other reasons but between r-slurred zoomettes literally discriminating based on bubble color (it's not a meme foids my age actually do this and talk about it openly) and google becoming increasingly user-hostile and schizophrenic, iphones are the more pragmatic option for me at the moment.

Yeah it was a completely random cross-section of apps that started disabling themselves if they detected a root. IIRC the biggest offenders were any apps that relied on location access to function, even if location spoofing would not have negatively impacted the app. Like I get it if pokemon go doesn't want people spoofing their location, but then you have things like 3rd party navigation apps and fast food apps deciding "we can't let rooted users on our app because what if they spoof their location to Kiritimati island and try to order a cheeseburger there??" How the frick does that cause a problem for anybody besides the user, who would have to be knowingly spoofing location in the first place?
