In America, Muslims accepted gay people long before evangelical Christians. There's a ton of anti-Muslim rhetoric that tries to stereotype them all as violent religious extremists. There's similar proportions of genocidal psychopaths in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and even Buddhism. All of these extremists are evil when they get access to power. The people who try to frame one religion as better or worse than the others tend to have an agenda.

Theres plenty of pro-lgbt Muslims in America. It's a prejudicial assumption. Theres different denominations and levels of orthodoxy (or orthopraxy in Islams case) for any religion and/or belief system. While I'm not sure "xenophobia" is exactly the write term for a primarily anti-Islam stance, avoiding middle eastern people because thet might be homophobic is still xenophobia.

I got told I 'was one of the good ones' and he re-evaluated his stance on gays because I wasn't a living stereotype.
While I was happy to 'change hearts and minds' (by not sucking peepee in front of him?), he was surprised when I gently let him know that that wasn't really a compliment and that most gays are regular people just like most Muslims...right (haha I fibbed to him make a point).

Which has always been my stance. But given this was a university setting, the younger undergrads who were full off their first dose of activism could not conceive of not yelling and shaming someone you had a different view point or were raised in a different culture and actually never exposed to anything different.
Was sad to see them create a portion of their own oppression in a way (not to say they were responsible for people hating gays but rather the negative feedback loop they got stuck in from being obnoxious that reinforced their views that the world was hostile to them to the point of hysteria).

They tie themselves up in some sort of fantasy land trying to believe that gays have it so much worse in the US than the middle east. Most Christians won't agree with your gayness but typically will smugly be like "you'll find out when you die unless you repent" where as Muslims will warm up their stone throwing arm if you accidentally linger too long when wiping your butthole.

Whatever justifications you are making to yourself, it is still by definition, xenophobic. Whether they are irrational or rational reasonings, being weary of an entire race/nationality/ethnic group solely because they are foreigners is xenophobic. Black people being weary of white people is still racist, but no one cares because it isn't yet problematic. You are making an assumption based off of how someone looks and acting based upon that assumption. It's the same as if you said you were scared of black people because a lot of them commit crime, or scared of middle eastern people because a lot of them are terrorists, etc.:
