Mr. Zuckerberg and Dr. Chan were caught off guard by activism at their philanthropy, according to people close to them. After the protests over the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, a C.Z.I. employee asked Mr. Zuckerberg during a staff meeting to resign from Facebook or the initiative because of his unwillingness at the time to moderate comments from Mr. Trump.

The incident, and others like it, upset Mr. Zuckerberg, the people said, pushing him away from the foundation's progressive political work. He came to view one of the three central divisions at the initiative — the Justice and Opportunity team — as a distraction from the organization's overall work and a poor reflection of his bipartisan point-of-view, the people said

Just like Trump broke peoples brains, George Floyd and COVID did too in the other direction

OK u got me to seriouspost so Ive actually done more than 10 second google now out of curiosity and literally every single website gives different values for both on same months

The verge says its 250m vs 175m in july for example https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/9/24194765/x-is-stuck-at-250-million-daily-users

I have no idea what is backlinko and if theyre reliable but theres statistically no possibility DAU is 1/3 of MAU like it says here https://i.rdrama.net/images/17273785484188726.webp

But they also say below that the high estimates are selfreported and sensortower are much lower and different for xitter: https://i.rdrama.net/images/17273785484859803.webp

Here it was apparently 27m in february in the same article so again its not really possible it went to 200m in span of few months but im not a statisticel

That's the thing though, I can't believe the numbers because I've literally never seen anyone anywhere link to threads or really even talk about the website or anything posted on there in a context that isn't about comparing it to twitter. It might be where I'm looking but if it has remotely comparable numbers that shouldn't be the case. This is just my personal experience, but I'd imagine that I'm not the only one this is true for.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Also Zuck doesn't give a shit about Threads and I assume he only launched it to annoy Musk. Meanwhile Fakebook and Instagram both have like a quarter of the world population as users.

Haha, your fourth most popular product isn't quite as successful as my flagship isn't really much of a dunk.

Oh yeah let me help you out.

No one knows except for the Zuck and some execs. You're likely wrong because realistically there's no actual data available to the public, just marketing numbers thrown around. This goes for Twitter and Threads.

But literally who cares? Social media is garbage, and for stupid people most of the time. It's premium is on speed, not accuracy. Misinformation comes from all sides.

Jump in the discussion.

I don't think public companies have to post all of their data in general, just some important subsection of it. DAU of a product is probably pretty important but if they're not putting all that much effort into the product then idk

wasn't Threads' user count basically bullshitted by Zuck to be anyone with an Instagram account moreorless? Threads was engagement hacked up to 200m, people who stick :marseycheeky: around are probably much lower, 300m was the ballpark figure :marseypop: early in musk's reign, but they first :marseywinner: switched to made up metrics like "unregretted user minutes" to cope with falling :marseyslipperyslope2: users then stopped publicly citing any numbers :marseynoooticer: which suggests the internal stats :marseychartdowntrend2: are plummeting. Unfortunately marketing material is the only semi-reliable numbers :marseysoypointtrips: for these arguments, but similarweb/sensor tower have sorta-useful trendlines.

I mean IDK, it seems like every "expert" (sometime real experts too) saying it was going to fail in two weeks was so incredibly off base.

I think musk's strat of having more people pay directly was a very good move- now you can offset the costs of whales who use the site the most. They're hopelessly addicted too so it's a reliable revenue stream.

I also don't buy into the ad companies stepping away- that's been happening in every sector of the media landscape. I know of many podcasters who are going through the same "adpocalypse" so to say.

The problem always was that buying a public company to take private is always very expensive so he overpayed for what was always a difficult to monetize platform

Which would be fine if it was just his $$ but he also has bankers and other investors backing it who want $$

But otherwise if he dropped the operating cost, maintain a very active user-base (more important than raw total numbers) it will survive.

Retail brands dropping advertising is mostly going to be a temporary anyway

Elon isn't the best steward tho, removing the login wall was the best thing he did when he first bought it. Only to readd it worse
