At least 46 people, most of them children, have drowned while bathing in rivers and ponds swollen by recent floods during the observance of a Hindu religious festival celebrated by millions in north India, authorities said Thursday.

It probably didn't had to be that deep if there were lots of water currents in the flooded areas. Or just a current they weren't used with. It's absurd how treacherous a body of water can be even if it looks calm on the surface.

A lot of indians just can't swim, so it's not very surprising they have trouble if the water looks shallow enough to stand up in, but actually isn't. Especially children
