Throwback from 1992, linear extrapolation gone wrong: "If women's running performance continues to improve at the rate at which it has soared since the 1920's, the top women will soon be running as swiftly as the best men, and may even outrun them someday, two physiologists say." :gokurun:

"Before I looked at the data, I would have thought the possibility of women catching up hovered somewhere between implausible and extremely unlikely," Dr. Whipp said in a telephone interview. "But if current progressions continue, the consequence is that men and women might be running equivalent speeds in the next century."

He added, "This is not me talking, it's the data."

THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE

In Olympic running events, "women will never, ever catch up to the men," said Fred Lebow, the president of the New York Road Runners Club. "Maybe on paper this looks good, but I've been to 100 marathons around the world, and I've seen all the women runners. Women will never pass men. Never, never."

Everyone interviewed in the article seems to disagree with our two geniuses. It's not surprising; all great thinkers are ridiculed at first. :marseybigbrain:

P.S. There's also a rebuttal letter published a few weeks later: "Will Women Runners Overtake Men?"

Sure, but the original article wasn't published because the NYT editor thought women would eventually out-run men, it was published to cause controversy and sell papers.

It's the analog version of click-bait.

Picture this: I'm at a standstill. BANG: I hear the gunshot, and start running. From the starting block, I accelerate at 100 square feet per second, and am soon running at 12 miles per hour within a second. In the next second, I'm running at 18 mph. In the next, 24 mph.

Extrapolating from this data, (and to save you a little arithmetic), it's not impossible to assume that within only a minute, I'm running at 287 miles per hour. Within only an hour, I can begin to circle the earth counterclockwise severally, and travel back in time.

As you can see, my argument has numbers in it, and is thus incontrovertible.

That is correct. The fact that you aren't able to run around the planet after the numbers are in just proves that you are lazy child.

Have you considered that women may just be lazy fricks that don't want to do work, and therefore are worse at things than men?
