One thing growing up in a small town taught me is that people who've spent their entire lives in cities and adjacent suburbs literally have no concept of how little money survival actually takes.
Luckily for us that meant they kept voting for statewide minimum wage increases so when I was a high schooler I bought a car and saved enough for my first year of college.
