Whatever ended up happening to all of the /r/atheism wave anyways? Did all of those people come to be the modern day communist/socialists in lemmy or bluesky? Did they commit suicide? Grow up from the emo phase? You just never see those sort of people anymore at all. The last time I saw someone with an atheist tattoo was like 8 years ago
I was in and around the movement at the time, antitheist, the whole 9, also an objectivist
If it comes up, my views on religion haven't really changed, it just gets a bit boring harping on the same topic again and again, so I generally won't bring it up unless prompted.
At the same time from 2010 to present you saw the atheist movement fracture down the middle, you have your anti sjw wave circa 2016 and onward and your progs
I think the zeitgeist has shifted to different issues, and strange bedfellows on the right and left for atheists of either camp e.g. islamists and recently palestinian supporters on the left vs evangelicals on the right
Do you feel like there's an opposition to the freedom of religion in America? For as much posting I'm used to seeing on Reddit and HN, I am seeing a lot more who seem to fundamentally disregard it as a foundational liberal principle.
Do you feel like there's an opposition to the freedom of religion in America?
Unless if redditors try to get into politics themselves (not going to happen because they'd have to go outside), then no, this is uniquely a reddit subculture thing that gets laughed at by everyone from all political views outside of their leddit hugbox, not even average dems on other websites are this insane.
do you think it's worth extrapolating political opinions from internet fringes? It sure seems like they can worm their way into regular political discourse eventually.
Nah I'm with you, American liberals definitely targeted religion with the COVID lockdowns and the Demonrats have been beating the drums linking topics like natural law (the idea that human rights come from God, rather than the government) to the bogeyman of Christian nationalism on CNN/MSNBC etc. I don't feel like searching for links on it but @BWC isn't even in the country.
Governments ordering churches to shut down during covid was pretty clearly an unconstitutional violation of religious freedom. However, you could say that ordering other kinds of businesses to shut was equally unfair. I don't trust any government to determine what is "vital."
Religious exemptions are dumb. There were plenty of non-religious reasons to dodge the vaccine, and most popular religions would not actually forbid it anyway. So people had to play this game to interpret their religion in such a way they didn't have to comply with an irrational and authoritarian directive. But setting up the exemption as religious essentially marks your objection as irrational (or at least outside of reason), so you're ceding ground before the game even starts. This lays the groundwork for the eventual end of such exemptions.
People should have enough freedom that you don't need to demonstrate an arbitrarily "good" reason to do or not do something. Set up a country like that, and religious freedom is safe forever. But if government is empowered to decide what is "essential" or what is a "good reason," liberty will be threatened the minute that the government decides its priorities outweigh yours. Either something is a right or it isn't; a right that disappears in an "emergency" is no right at all.
Yeah, its getting worse for Gen z as well apparently. Cant remember where i saw it but something said that millenials were more likely to think religion was dumb but not hate you fo rit, whereas genz would be more likely to hate you for it than just think it was dumb
I have thoughts about this but I can't figure out how to articulate them
Gen z lacks the context that gens x and y had from growing up when religion was still pretty prominent, so to gen z there is ~zero perceived upside to religion. Or something like that. I can't word good right now.
thanks, glad someone enjoys what i post here! im only back because reading radtrad garbage on reddit got me so mad i had to give it up, and this place isnt nearly as bad lol

When redditor core beliefs align with those of normies, the normies will adopt the narwhal bacon rhetoric redditors use to support it.
Normies won't adopt their other positions though, because most of them aren't childless losers
