Researchers found that while strength in female video game characters might signal capability, it doesn't counterbalance the negative impact of sexualization. But in a surprising twist, female participants—despite generally disliking highly sexualized characters—were more likely to choose these characters when given the option to play as one.

I don't find that very surprising at all especially if you have played any of the aesthetic heavy MMOs like Guild Wars 2 and FF14 which tend to have a high female playerbase. In general I think women are more likely to self insert themselves into their characters while men are more likely to take the role of the hero, but don't really consider the character to be an extension of their actual self.
Also I think men are more likely in general to play as the opposite s*x compared to women which will usually always play as a woman.

Yeah I am not surprised by that as well as women really won't even play bestial female characters either, only humanoid races.

Nobody who actually talks to women who play video games would ever be surprised by this.
I've played a lot of League of Legends over the years, and know hundreds of women who play, and with extremely few exceptions they all play exclusively as sexy/cute female characters. Or the cute cat. Most of them also choose the outfits that make their characters look sexier.

I read the whole article too. Their main point is that highly feminine traits are also viewed as highly sexual traits. The thing is men are portrated the same way, we just dont call it sexual. The main reason young men have these power fantasies and want to be strong and capable is because it gets us kitty, or whatever your chosen genitals are. The men are sexualized, just not in the same way. Men get s*x by doing, women get s*x by being. There's a blog post by Riot explaining that they really did try for a period of time to design non-sexualized new female champions&skins in an attempt to attract more female players, but it turned out that they all wanted to just play the pretty characters anyway so they gave up on that.
