Update to https://rdrama.net/post/328943/chess-tournament-asks-player-to-change
the TLDR via kiwi forums
Magnus explains the FIDE staff refused to discuss and find common ground yesterday, which pissed him off. Called them robots who can't think for themselves and can't deviate slightly from the rules, kek.
Magnus is still not sure if he even broke any rules (makes sense considering the info I posted earlier, that the new rules were in force for this event specifically)
Perhaps the sponsors made a stink about Magnus not playing, hence they pressed FIDE to get Magnus back into the event? (Edit to add: This is my personal speculation)
Magnus will be playing in jeans as a matter of principle (and a frick you to FIDE)
On account of why he did not want to change: he thought FIDE was harsh, he did not agree with how they acted so he decided to dig his heels in (called it)
Magnus thinks "we all want the same thing". He agrees people should show up well dressed and presentable. He thinks everyone generally agrees on that. He thinks his outfit yesterday was within those parameters. (He wore a light blue button-up shirt, grey blazer, jeans, navy socks, and black leather shoes)
Magnus agrees this was about more than jeans. Mentions the freestyle drama, but hints at something else, too. I am not sufficiently up to date with chessdrama to read between the lines here, though.
Magnus was prepared to walk away from FIDE before over other disagreements. (So it makes sense that he was so quick to say frick you and leave over something small like jeans drama)
Magnus roasts the arbiter multiple times throughout the interview, kek.
Subtly dunks on Niemann when talking about Freestyle event he wants to host. "We want to give not only the best players, but also others, like Niemann a chance to qualify."
Interview done in the culprit jeans. Of course.
